P v-26 FAVOR REDUCTION AND.C. REALTY TAX Takoma Park - Citizens Also _Want Half-and-Half Plan . of Financing. The Takoma Park Citizens' Associa- tion last night unantmously went on récord favoring the retention of the half-and-half plan of financing the District, the utilization of excess tax funds now in the United States Treas- ury.and reduction in the realty tax rate to 1% per cent. This action fol- ed the presenting of a resolution . Vice President L. B. Burdette, bearing on the subject aft€ the read- ing of the Senate bill 205 introduced By Senator Jones of Washington state, providing for the above fea- tayes. The association discussed at some éngth the opening and improving of Eastern avenue from Cedar to North Capitol street, President Jesse C. Suter casting the deciding vote fol- Iowing a tie, urging th.s improve- ment. On motion of W. T. Simmons, the as- mociation adopted a resolution that the best interests of the business men of Takoma Park, engaged in organ- ising a chamber of commerce, could be served through the citizens' association and the officers and busi- Mess interest committee were re- uested to extend an invitation to thosé interested to put the same ac- tivity in the business interest section. “The business interests committee is domposed of the following: H. K. Ho- bart, chairman; Samuel C. Redman Glickman, Sam Goodman. W. B. He riok, B. Bruce Lamond, Prof. Louis D. Bliss, H. L. Thornton, C. R. Pember- ton, J. W. Dudley, S. P. Coale, Arthur " 'Skinner, F. D.B." Austin and Lloyd B..Gosorn The following were elected to mem- | bership: Wilbur R. Matton. Albert L. rrows, A. L. Wilson and L. B. Lam- son. The association voted to co-operate &nd participate in the July 4 celebra- tlon and parade to be held again thi: year. L. B. Burdette was appointe. ehuirman of the committee to repre- Zent the association. Dr. D. N. Shoemaker presanted a re- port of the activities of the Federa- tion of Citizens' Associations. Maj. 8. Seemingly as if this comedy of J. Hartley Manners was entirely new, the audlence laughed joyfully many times, and found tears dimming its vision on more than one occasion. Designated as a “comedy of youth,” the refresh- ing delight found in its revival indi- cates it has that which Ponce De Leon took a long trail to find. Those responsible for its revival revel apparently in that quality of long if not perpetual life, for the pro- gram contains as a new feature the announcements of the number of times which each member of the cast has portrayed his of her role. Not a single piayer has appeared in the assigned ! part less than 128 times, while Percy Ames has delighted audiences with his interpretation of drol! Alaric 500 times; {A. E. Matthews, as the likeable Jerry, | | 1137 times, and Miss Taylor, as the vivaclous Peg, 1,238 times—not to men- tion long-! d, four-footed “Michael,” who began his stage career at the age of nine, has made his particular appeal 1,110 times. Miss Taylor, in a pleasant little speech, which the audience de- manded at the end of the second act, admitted the trial involved in such a large number of repetitions, adding, however, that while there was-a feel- ing of being simply a phonograph there was inspiration in portraying the old role in a new city. The Irish “Peg” of Miss Taylor, seen last night, was-not as hoydenish or hilarious as some other Pegs which Washington audiences have seen. Of course, she was not a sub- dued Peg, but the appeal was in more reserved emotional channels without a loss of the spontaneous, natural outbursts of spcech or actions that has endeared the role to almost a decade of theatergoers. This method showed to decided advantage the art of the actress, who portrays emotions with such apparent ease. In the telling of this very human story of the girl suddenly plunged into surroundings of a wealthy Eng- lish home so much in contrast to thc environment of a none-too-well-sup- ported wage-earner's home in New Yory city, every member of the cast contributes his full share. Foremost is Mr. Matthews, whose Jerry is re- freshingly unconventional and natu- ral. Percy Ames gives the English atmosphere in a delightfully amusing vein, being assisted ably by Miss Maud Milton as his “mater” and by Miss Greta Kemble Cooper as his un- happy sister. Marion Harris and Company. The return of Marion Harris vaudeville, at Keith's this week, lted in an ovation last evening, singing of “coon songs” stamping her a8’ an artist in that line. She is as- sisted by a jazz band, the act stand- ing out In 2 bill of exceptional ex- cellence. Miss Harris has “personal- ity.” “I Ain’t Got Nobody,” her latest song, scored a hit. At the conclusion to re- Miss Harris tried to beg off, but aS[ANCFACTURE] r | to sell extracts: dozen curtain calls finally induced he: to sing again. Then it was necessary to lower the lights to stop the ap- plause. Franklyn and Charles, newcome: presented a novel burlesque dance, concluding with an acrobatic offering that displayed wonderful feats of strength. Ernestine Cary helped out with songs and at the plano. Spencer and Willlams, the former a comedian Wwith original ideas, kept the audience laughing. “Doc” Baker, “the lightning change artist,” is a good singer, but empha- zes quick changes in his offering, Flashes.” He has a pretentious sup- porting company, with many girls in rich aostumes.
