JEWS TO OBSERVE FEAST OF PURIM WEDNESDAY Sending of Gifts and Exchange of Friendly Visits Among Features. \ The feast of Purim, which occurs next Thursday. will be celebrated Wednesday evening with services in the synagogues of the city and will continue through the next day. The ritual of the Purim feast con- sists in the reading of the Book or Scroll of Esther in the original or in a translation. In days of old this reading was accompanied by the un- restricted comments of the congre- gation on the contents of the scroll. The mention of Queen Esther and Modecai was the occasion for ap- plause, while the trickeries of Ha- man were ridiculed and reviled by any noisy method or instrument. The semi-mirtaful treatment of this biblical story yielded in course of time to a more sober rendition. The story of the Jewish people in ancient Persia, where the scene of the Book of Esther is located, reflected in part the career of the Jewish people in all ages. Then, even as now, in some quarters, the Jewish people were be- set by opponents ang daily their lives weyo threatened as they were in the story of Esther, which relates how they were plotted against by Haman. The joyous celebration of this feast was never modified in the darRest period of Israel's career. The bitter experiences the Jewish people were forced to endure gave them greater | reason to observe this festival in a | spirit of merriment, in order to coun- teract the sadness of their own lot and revive their lagging faith in God. who shielded them against the WestemPresbvtmanChurch Georgetown Church New York Avenue Presby- By the CHOIR OF 165 VOICES.
