Contemplated construction work in the district comprising Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia during the period from January 1 to March 1 amounted to four times the work contracted for, giving promise of in- creased build#ing activity soon, says the F. W Dodge Company's review, just made public. q Contracts let during February eastern Pennsylvania, southern N Jersey. Delaware, Maryland, Dist of Columbia and Virginia amounted to $16.367,000. an Increase of 17 per cent over Jlnuil’)‘ The first two months of this year have maintained a lead of five mil- lions over the first two months of 1919. The principal items in the February awards were: Eight million_ nine hundred and five thousand, or 54 per, cent for residential buildings; $2.323,- 000, or 14 per cent, for business build- ings: $1,919,000, or 12 per cent, for public works and utilities, and $1.004.- 000, or 6 per cent, for industrial build- ings. Among the contemplated projects public works and utilities lead, with residential work in second place. Building activity throughout the country has proceeded at a greater rate during the first two months ot fhis year than during the first two months of 1919, according to statistics ompiled by the company. Conditions in the opening months of 1919 were very similar to those prevailing at present. Total contracts awarded from Janu- ary 1 to March 1, 1921, in the twenty- five northeastern states of the coun- try amounted to $212,437.000, com- pared with $152,784,000 for the first two months of 1919. The total contracts awarded in Feb- ruary, 1921, was slightly less than in the preceding month, but in view of the fact that February was shorter than January by three business days, the same rate of activity has been maintained during the two monthi January contracts amounted to $111 §48,000; February contracts, $100,789, 0 00. Among the contracts awarded In February residential building took the lead, represcnting 36 per cent of the total, or $36.294,000. Public wi and_utilities amounted to $18.609. oon. or 18 per cent of the fotal; business buildings. $17.070,000, or 17 per cent of the total, and industrial building: $5,037,000, or 9 per cent of the total. Contemplated new work was report- ed in February to the amount of $561,342,000. It should be explained that this includes $200.000,000 for the proposed bridge over the Hudson riv- er, a project which will doubtless take a long time to mature. Nevertheless, even if this large project be omitted. the remainder of the contemplated work has been exceeded in only one month since last June. TWO-WEEK REVIVAL.
