Some ‘of the newgélors recently sponsored in New Yotk jhave names possessing a decldidly, domestic savor, such as “pewten'® “zinc” and “sponge.” The shaded vary slightly from the grays and tans which have been used so much, .and the mnovel appellations serve to distinguish | them. Perhaps the most popular of the three is “pewter,” for the buyers say that it has created“a sensation on the “Gay White Way.” Pewter is a medium gray tint with just a suggestion of blue in it. A tallored street frock is developed from pewter-gray Poiret twill. with sleeve and narrow girdle lining of brocaded henna duvetyn. The neck is cut in-a low ‘V¥ st the front and a dainty gilet of €ream-colored embroidered organdy appears in the opening. The sleeves are three- quarter length and bell shaped, with a row of self-colored buttons running up one side of each. The skirt has an exceed- ingly narrow foundation, over which hangs a tunic composed of layers of tucks. Fruit trimming seems to be gaining in popularity, and this gown has a cluster of small seif-material apples at one side of the bodice and additional ones placed at intervals around the uppermost tuck. A spring suit is developed from navy tricotine, with unusual black braid trimming. The comt is made somewhat on Eton jacket lines, with oblong strips cut out the hem at equal intervals. In the spaces thus made there appear insets of nar- row braid pieces stitched together and overlapping each other in shut- ter fashion. ELIZABETH KENT. i Cretonne in the Living Room. | If the walls and rug of the living room are plain, then there should be reitef and variety in the curtains and upholstery, and it is often wise to plan a room in this way, because walls and rugs are more or less per- manent, but curtains and coverings can be changed from time to time. The delightful cretonnes, printed linens and chintzes on the market make such a plan attractive. But care must be taken not to mix colors and patterns regardlessly; there is really room for only one large- figured cretonne in one room. Plain cushions should be used on divans and chesterfields covered with figured cretonne, and curtains or other hang- ings, if they cannot be the same pat- tern as the cretonne, should be plain as well. One tires easily of large col- ored designs. tnless they are m: carefully chosen, and as a rule more { quickly of animals and birds in such designs. than of flowers, real or con- dealgns. tham O Gouraud’s Oriental Cream L) NN clean as a new pin.
