MACKENZIE DIES OF APOPLEXY IN BANK Former Chief of Army Engineers Expires Suddenly in Institution at 18th and Columbia Road. MAJ. N. MACKENZIE, ien. Alexander Mackenzie, U. retired, former chief of en- gineers of the Army, died suddenly yesterday from an attack of apoplexy while in the Northwest Savings Bank. 18th street and Columbia road north- s in his seventy-seventh nzie was born at Pgtosi, 1844, and attended the Wis., Academ. He was graduated from the United States Military Acadgmy, West Point, in 1864 at the head of his class and appointed first lieutenant of engineers. He served creditably in the civil war, receiving the brevet of captain for gallant and meritorious service. Afterward he served in various parts of the country in charge of important public' works, including the improve- ment of the harbors of Lake Michi- gan, the construction of the Louisville and the Portland canals and the im-| provement of sections of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. In January, 1904, he was appointed chief of en- gineers, with the rank of brigadier general, As chief of engineers he was in direct control of all public works in this vicinity, including the water supply system, the defenses of the capital, the improvement of the Po- tomac river, etc. He had been per- sonally identified with many local enterprises, as a member of the Rock Creek Park commission, the commis- sion on suburban highways of the District and of the board of confmis- sioners of the Soldiers’ Home. Gen. Mackenzie was placed on the Potired list, with the rank of major general, on May 25, 1908, after forty- four years of Army service. During the recent war he asked for return to active duty and was assigned to take of operations on the Mississippi river and along the Chicago lake front. He 'was retired again about a year ago. Since his retirement he had made his home here with his son-in-law and daugh- ter, ¥r. and Mrs. Eugene Raymond Hendley, 1858 Kalorama road north- west. He was a member of the Army and Navy Club and an honorary mem- ber of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Funeral services will be held to- morrow afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Church of the Incarnation, 12th and N streets northwest. The body will be taken to Milwaukee, Wis. CAPT. W. J. MURRAY DIES. Ctvil War Veteran Once Command- ed Libby Prison. Capt. W. J. Murray, Confederate vet- eran, at ome time in command of Libby prison died here Monday at the age of eighty-one years. Funeral services were held today at St. Aloy- sius Church. Interment was in New Cathedral cemetery, Baltimore. Capt. Murray was the son of W. J. Murray, widely known years ago in Baltimore as a me ant and manu- facturer. His home was at 15 Myr- tle street northeast. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Helen Murray Chamberlain. MRS.
