10 PLEDGE DONATION TOSTARVING CHINA' Members of Methodist Union g Hear Bishop Lambuth on m Famine Conditions. = An_extemporaneous speech on the g conditions of China in the famine districts, given by Bishop Walter g Hussell Lambath at the annual ban- [ auet of the Methodist Union of the g Washington district, held last night in_the gold room of the Raleigh Ho- i tel, resulted in a large donation being pledged for the relief of the starving Chinese. Immediately on the close of the address Bishop Wil- liam_F. McDowell offered a check for $50 and asked that a committee be appointed to take up a collection from all who had been moved to give by the speech. Representative Simeon D. Fess of Ohio followed With ,an- other such offer. and practically every guest at the banquet, about 300 persons, pledged himself for the price of the dinner. Bishop McDowell was on the pro- gram to speak, but he asked that Tis time be devoted to hearing de- tails of the situation in China by Bishop Lambuth, who had only just returned from the stricken area. 15,090,000 People Starving. . Bishop Lambuth said that in tke five ‘provinces that comprised the famine district there were 00,000 people who were iu a distressing condition, 15,000,000 of whom were actually |l starving and could not hope to live until harvest in May unless given aid. igg He said that this frightful state of| affairs was brought on by droughts gy of from two to three vears' duration, one._bad flood, and a pest of locusts. ([l Following these was a lack of food and clothing materials, resulting in starvation, suffering from exposure jg throughout the cold winter and the unabating disease that stalks on_the heals of such conditions. Bishop Lambuth affirmed the sto- ries that the Chinese had been forced in thousands of cases to kill or sell their children and added that the Chinese would be the last people in the world to do this because of their innate religious beliefs that the pray- ers of the children are necessary for happiness in the after world. Describes Work of Outlaws. He also told of the numberless out- Jaws and bandits that had been driven to crime from hunger and the re- sulting lawlessness. Representative Bess spoke of the problems of the diy that were being dealt with in Congress. Bishop Joseph F. Berry also spoke. Mrs. Mary S. Bowie, added severall vocal numbers, accompanied by George H. Wilson, and the Interior |l Department orchestra played through- out the dinner. One of the visiting troops, No. 21, put on an exhition of signaling and bandaging. followed by anecdotes by Maj. F. Moorman, scout master of Troop 33. The pictures shown were “Flashes of Action” of American sol- diers entraining on transports at Hoboken, N.
