Thomas Mitchell, the young man who sold ink and rode the clumsy bicycle invention of the young seamstress’s father, supplies the comedy and does it well. “BROADWAY BREVITIES.” When * the ‘curtain went up last night on “Broadway Brevitles” at Poli's & young man seated at a table told the audience he was going to write a revue without music, dancing, singing girls—and, 2] without girls. Then swept in a in abbre- | of girls, young and pretty, viated skirts, swamping the stage— the show was on. Clever dancers and fair singérs, eoupled with a group {of comedians, furnish entertainment that has not a moment that is not rick in action and laughter. The scenery and costumes will not bear comparison -with some other revues, “|ibut the entertainment has quality. i Three comedians are carried by the show—Bert Willlams, George Le Maire -and - George. McKay—and this trio keeps the audience in a hilarious state throughout the evening. Wil- liama has .never -been funnier. His crap game ‘in the corrider of the jail., his experience in a shoe store and Lis original songs are of the scream order and earn him great applause. Le Maire works with Williams a greater part of the evening and con- the “Follies” His exoeptional danc- ing and natural witticisms enabled him to share honors with the other two. Mildred Richardson sings well and won much applause, wkile Ula Sharon, a dancer of grace and beauty, was well received. The dancing of Bird and Bernard also is worthy of mention. 0 The “Brevities” as a whole is a big show, running through two acts and eighteen scenes, and the smoothness of its presentation reflects credit on the stage management. On only one or two occasions were encores al- lowed, but ¢ven then the final cur- 11 o'clock. The music of Con Conrad is of the catchy order, witk an almost entire absence of jazz. Fortunately the announcement in the program that the play has been “modernized” s true only in part. ‘“The Nights” has no more business being modernized than Rip Van Winkle or Cinderella or Ben. Hur. Taken out of the setting of its period it would be a sorry orphan. The earnestness ‘and ability of Mr. Downing, first as the drunkard, then as the remorseful father, and finally jas the big-heartéd minister, carry jthe play to success. His support varies {from mediocre to very good. Little Ruth Collins is appealing as Mary, Joe’s daughter, and her rendition of th old ballad, “Father, Dear Father,” leaves nothing to be desired. As Simon Slade, landlord of “The Sickle and Sheaf,” Francis Adair also deserves commendable mention, while the com- edy parts of Sample Switchell, the tippling constable, and Mehitable Cart- jright, the sentimental’ cook, afe well played by Charles Reilley and Mrs. Downing, respectively, their. wedding scene being: reminiscent of the time when subtlety was not considered necessary -to humor. = NEWMAN'S LECTURE. “Ireland” was described and pic~ tured by E. Another evidence of the increasing ease of money was given in the quick sale of the Belgian twenty-year, 8- per cent bonds. There not been a big bond issue of any foreign gov- ernment offered in the American market in months but what has been 3 | Quickly snapped up by the invest- ing public eager to get in at the high rates for a reasonably long- term investment. The American bond market has been more active for months than ever before. People have sustained losses and made money in stocks. just as they have in bonds. but the bond market has the call among the investing public. In 1920 “the sales totaled $3.88 623,000 par value of bonds.
