Ernest Thompson Seton threw two bombshells into the meeting of th tion of Vivisection, during a short address yesterday afternoon in the Shoreham Hotel, and after the smoke started clearing away, another storm broke from members, whe disagreed | with his statements. His first statement was that he w taking the middle ground on vivise tion. He believed that the rights of humans when they clashed with the rights inherent to animals should be This caused a flurry of s paramount, excitement among enthusiastic an- tagonists of vivisection. He follow ed up his statement by that he noticed many furs being worn ! among the members of his audience, and that animals had suffered from two to three days’ agonies in traps. in all probability. to provide these furs. Mrs. H. B. F. M rland asked the speaker at the conclusion of his ad- dress if he believed that animalsi should be put through the agonies of the so-called scientific vivisection in order to allow experimentation of theories. Mr. Seton swung back with the statement that if his child were threatened with blindness and could only be saved by the killing of an ani- mal to allow grafting of animal nerves, thereby saving the sight, he was in' favor of the vivisection of onc animal or 100 animals, if necessary, make it possib Mrs. Macfarland declared that she would go blind or lame or ill rather | than cause 100 animals the agonies and suffering of vivisection. “Has the speaker a child?’ asked Mr. Seton. Mrs. Macfarland admitted that she had not, but followed up with the statement that a widowed sister had been living with her since 1905. and that her child had sta of vivisection at the 3 years, at that time when Vivi antagonism was starting its spr that “it was the devil's own work." Mir. Seton inferred that it was his be- lef that the words had been put into the child’s mouth. At this point Rev. C. the president, stopped the debate with a statement that the b: for it was purely hypothetical and announced that future business was awaiting consider- ation. Miss Nellie C. Williams, member of the national committee, writer and tra eler, delivered a short address before Mr. Seton appeared. She told of the work for regulation of vivisection that had Deen done in Paris.
