ALONG THE RIVER FRONT BOAT BEING CONSTRUCTED ON A NEW PLAN. ‘The Inventor Promises to,Produce a Speedy Vessel—General and Personal Items, Browne, trustees, ‘Thomas Dowling & Oo., Aucts., 612 E st. n.w.— Receivers sale of No. 728 6th st. n.e., on Tuesday, May 8, at 4:30 p.m. Benjamin ¥F, Leighton, re- There is being bullt in a shed on Fosberg & Murray's wharf, between 7th and 8th Streets southwest, a new design of boat, which its inventor, Mr. W. B. Motherall, seems to think will be a most speedy craft and will be the invention of the century. The boat, which is about twenty-five feet long and eight feet broad, resembles an ordinary flat-bottom boat, although {t 1s somewhat more wedge-shaped than is gen- erally seen In such construction. Between her bottom, which is of sheet iron, and the floor timbers, there runs an air chamber, and Mr. Motherall claims that by forcing air by means of pumps through numerous little holes in the sheet-iron bottom, while the boat is in motion, she will be made to float with a layer of air between her bot- tom and the wacer, thus greatly decreasing friction, making her more buoyant and add- ing to her speed with smaller power than is now possible. The new craft is to be propelled by a stern wheel of the Mississippi river type, with feathering blades, driven by a small gasoline engine. It will be several weeks before the boat is completed and a trial had on the Potomac. There are living and doing business in Washington a hundred or more persons who have property at Colonial Beach, and who spend considerable time there during the summer. They are all anxious to have a steamer make dally excursion trips to cetver. bet. 15th and 16th sts. 8.¢. at 6:45 p.m Browne, trustees. Chancery sale of No M st. 3. min, surviving trustee.
