A dispatch from Cambridge, Md., last night says: A most .specking tragedy was discovered at a small! farm seven miles from this city today, A*’German family, consisting of Carl Kertifg, his wife and son, were discovered dead jp their little farm- house, each corpse having a noose about the neck. Strangulation was probably the cause of death in each cage. John hantre, a jeweler of this city, who owns the farm tenanted by the Ker- nig family, visited the place today. Find- ing everything quiet, he entered the house and was shocked to discover the body of Mrs. Kernig tled with.a rope to a door knob. The son, Carl, was suspended from a bed post in the same room, his body resting upon the floor, while his neck was neid tightly in a noose, In an adjoining room the body of the elder Kernig was found, hanging from.a hook. Mr. Tschantre sent a messenger to Cambriage for assistance, and the sheriff and other officials responded immediately. From the decomposed condition of the bodies it is thought the triple tragedy must have taken place several days ago. As far as known the last seen of either member of the family was last Saturday, when the elder Kernig came to Cambridge and drew $600 from the bank. No trace of this money could be found today, but the authorities are of the opinion that it was sent west to relatives. A small sum of money was found in a purse in the pocket of Mrs. Kernig. Many persons who saw the bodies this afternoon are of the opinion that murder has been done, but the authorities think it sulcide. They point to the statement of neighbors to the effect that all the members of the family are known to have been de- spondent of late, and give it as their opin- ion that young Carl Kernig assisted his father and mother to hang themselves, and then, by making a half hitch with the rope, strangled himself. The investigation will be continued to- morrow. The Kernigs came here from Wi- comico county a short time ago. ——_+e+-____ HOT FIGHTS WITH FILIPINOS. Three Hundred Rebels Killed in Re- cent Engagements. MANILA, April 26.—About 200 of the en- emy have been killed recently in North Llo- cos, including Dodd’s fight and the attack on Batoe April 16, when 600 to 700 rebels, a quarter of whom were armed with riftes, determinedly attacked the Americans, charging their positions and fighting at clese quarters. The engagement lasted all the afternoon, the enemy burning the town; but they were repulsed, after the arrival of American reinforcements. "The insurgents generally are aggressive in that province. They captured an Amer- ican provision wagon near Lapo. The Americans having obtained evidence that the alcaldes of Lapo, Magsingal, Ca- bugas and Sinait were holding treacherous communication with the insurgents, impris- oned them and burned Lapo's town hall. There have been several minor fights in the province, Including an attack by 200 In- sure on Lavag, April 17, forty of whom we ~led and eighty captured. The officers report that the men of the 33d Reg- ment and 3d Cavalry are behaving splen- didly under try circumstances. There were no American casualties at Batoc, where 18) insurgents were killed and sev- enty were ptured. Why Hanna Opposed Quay.
