HOTBED OF THE INSURGENTS CLEARED OUT BY THE CAMPAIGN OF GEN, SCHWAN. : Provinces Transformed Into Settled Farming Lands — Credit Due to the Cavalry Under Col. Hayes. Interesting details have reached the War Department in regard to the highly suc- cessful campaign eonducted by General Schwan, in the southern provinces of Lu- zon, which has been des:§ibed as one of the most important operations of the war in the Philippines. It resulted in opening and clearing a territory before practically un- known to Americans and long looked upon as the hotbed of the insurgents. As a re- sult of General Schwan’s operations these provinces have been transformed into set- Ued farming lands, whose rich pent-up produce adds so much to the markets of the principal ports in the south. According to one correpondent the principal credit for this happy result ts due to the cavalry di- vision under Lieutenant Colonel E. M. Hayes of the 4th Cavalry, as his flying column mage the steady advance of the in- fantry possible. Praise of the Cavalry. General Schwan, tn his report of the expe- dition, refers especially to the work of Hayes’ cavalry as follows: The cavalry command deserves special notice and commendation. The object of the column to which {t belonged was the destruction or dispersion of the enemy in parts of the provinces of Cavite and Lagu- ha and in the provinces of Batangas and Tayabas, and the permanent occupation of this territory by United States troops. The provinces named, save Tayabas, may be stid to have been the hotbed of the insur- rection, and the locality in which the insur- rectionary movement fad its orig’n. While in the northern part of Luzon the collapse of the rebellion through the vigorous action of our troops was en January 1 an accom- plished fact, the insurgent organization in the territory mentioned was then still in- in fact, had been reinforced by ac- sions from the north. ‘The hostility of population—which prectuded the infor- jon of a scout and spy service—the lz ck f wagon reads its and of accurate maps, de the task assigned to the brigade an arduous and difficult one, ver- cally completed withig This gratifying re tion's operations was in a measure the Work of the cavalry command. It Is stated that the negotiations for the ‘payment of indemnity demanded for the tle- struction of American missionary property in Turkey during the Armenian massacres in 1805 have reached their logical conclu- sion. Minister Straus obtained the promise of the Sultan that Indemnity, amounting to should be paid, and that ing been twice renewed the last tine prior to Minister Straus’ departure from Cons’ antinople it was unde the minister, as well as by the artment, that payment would be. forth- coming. Sixteen months have passed since the promise was made, and it has not been fulfilled, and the question presents it- self, what action will this government take to enforce its observance. Meanwhile, the President has refused to accept the resig nation of Minister Straus, and has indeti- nitely extended his leave of absence. —_--—__ AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c, Today. James W.
