Walter Maben, who served in Cuba with the District volunteers, but now of Company K, 27th United States Infantry Volunteers, on duty in the Island of Luzon, recently wrote a letter home, detailing his experiences at the front, from which the following extract Is take! J “I have not been on the sick report since I left Camp Meade. When we were up on the north line I was detached from the company and put in charge of thirty native scouts, with orders to report to Lieut. n. Lawton's chief of scouts. You will make a good scout. “And then I said: ‘You know where to find me when you want me.’ His answer was, ‘I want you.’ “The next day after he was killed the company received an order for me to report to him in person. He was not afraid of anything. He wore a white uniform and a big white helmet. His sca was with him all the time, wearing a captain's shoulder straps for a time. COLDER TONIGHT. Fair Weather Indicated, With Fresh Northerly Winds. Forecast till 8 p.m. Thursday—For the District of Columbia, Delaware and Mary- land, fair; colder tonight. Thursday, fair; fresh northerly winds. For Virginia, fair tonight; colder in north- ern and western portions. Thursday, fair; fresh northerly winds. Weather conditions and general forecast— The feature of prominence on the weather map this morning is the widesvread high pressure area. It covers the entire country, except New England and the southern por- tion of the gulf states, with the abnormally high crest of 31.00 inches in the British northwest. The depression which Was cen- tral Tuesday morning over Lake Huron has reached extreme eastern Canada. Through- out its whole course this storm caused an extremely small amount of precipitation. During the past three days precipitation to an appreciable amount has occurred |in but very few places, an almost unprece- dented condition of affairs for this season of the year. During the past twenty-four hours there has been a marked fall in temperature, ex- cept in the gulf and Atlantic states, with a cold wave over portions of the lake regions a extreme northwest. A temperature of 42 degrees below zero occurred at White Ri Canada. The prevailing high area over the north will cause colder weather in the middle Auantic states and New England tonight, and temperatures below the seasonal aver- age wiil likely continue over the northern half of the country, with generally fair weather for the next two or three days. In the south, however, there will likely be rain for the next two days on account of the low pressure area in the southwest, which shows a tendency to move eastward and encounter the colder north. On the Atlantic coast the winds will be fresh and mostly north to e: Cold wave signals are di: and northern eastern New Massachusetts, and Ni Vermont. Records for Twenty-Four Hours.
