The committee was composed of the fol- lowing well-known men: Dr. H. B. Horl- beck, Charleston; Surgeon General G. M. Sternberg, Washington, D. €.; Dr. C. P. Wilkinson, New Orleans; Dr. 8. H. Durgin, Boston; Dr. Josiah Hartzell, Canton; Dr. A. H. Doty, New York; Dr. J. ¥. Porter, Jacksonville. The same committee called on the Pres- ident one year ago, and in his message the President r2zecommended that a commission of four expert bacteriologists be appointed to conduct a systematic examination. The committee told the President that a com- mission is more important now than ever before. Th2 President agreed with them and will repeat his recommendation of last year. He was arrested last week by Lieut. Smith, charged with breaking and entering a scow anchored off Fishtowa, and stealing a shotgun belonging to a party named Morton. After hearing the evidence the mayor sent the case on to th> grand jury. Henry Arnold, arrested by Officer Beitis, charged with using abusive and insuliing language on the street, was assessei $2. George Kuhn and Richard Washington, colored, arrest2d by Officer Wilkinson on & charge of throwihg stones on the street, were fined $1 each. Howard Hardy, arrested by Officer Atkin- son, on a charge of disorderly conduct at the Salvation Army meetings, was asscss-d $2.50. George Elliot and Walter Posey were ar- rested by Sergt. Smith and Officer Atkin- son, charged with fighting. Posey forfeited $5 collateral by non-appearance and Elliot was dismissed.
