New French Corporation Organized to Complete the Work. trom the Engineering News. As some of our readers may recal!, after | the Panama bubble burst in 1890, and work on the canal came to a standstill, the com- pany's affairs were placed by the courts tn the hands of a “liquidator,” or rec: we should say, who remained until 1894, when the « assets of the old cempany w to the new company. Ac ng to formation from official sources, this new company was organized by leading bankers and financiers of France who had in- nection whatever with the old « and by them a working capital of $1 was subscribed. In taking over company no cash was paid for its assets but the holders of stock in the ol! eom- pany are entitled to receive ain part of the residuary profits of the new com- pany from the working of the canal. should there be such profits, after the ch < on the securities to be issued by the pany have been provided f: From all we can learn, this newecompany has devoted itself almost entirely th task of investigating the engineering prob- lems at Panama and determin’ ost thorough manner the these problems. De Lesse for a sea-level canal was abandoned he remembered, even before the apse the old company; but the details of a new the height of its levels, the lift of . and, more impertant than all. the questions of the control of the Chagres river and of the sliding of the great earth mass at Culebra, had all to be investigated and settled by the engineers of the new company. The detailed plans ghus prepared were submitted first to a board of French con- sulting enginzers, which included represen tatives of the receiver of the old company. After this board had further elaborated the project and approved it in detail, an tn- ternational engineering commission wad appointed. which again went over the en- tire project, visiling and inspecting the works on the Isthmus, and examining the engineering problems involved Gen. Abbott's paper in this issue of FEn- gineering News is the first publication to be made anywhere respecting the work of this commission and the conclusions which they reached. According to this paper. a satisfactory plan ha: developed for rol of the Cha and the water of the summit 1. Adeitional the Culebra cut has shown that the sliding of its scan be successfully controlled. The work y done by the old company is estimated to have been equivalent to an expenditure of abort $125,- 000.000, and the cost of the work remaining to be done to complete the canal reacy for traffic is set at $100,000,14H) Th me quired to complete the canal is apparently fixed by the excavation remaining b done om th great Culebra cut, and is set at ten years. The.interest charges on the any’s securities during the period are apvarently not included in the above ?100,- 090,000, and will increase the actual cost of the canal by one-fourth or more. 3en. From all the information that we can glean, however, we believe that a few months hence, when the complete report of the international engineering commission is made public, an effort will be made to raise funds for the completion of the work; and it seems quite probable that the pro- ject will be placed in so favorable a light before European financiers that the re- quired amount may be obtained. This report of the engineering commis- sion, we are informed, will probably be ready for publication before the close of the year, ard will be accompanied by re- ports prepared by eminent French s‘atis- ticians (among them M. Leroy-Beaulieu) upon the prebable traffic und earning power of the canal. This is a matter which has been heretofore lightly passed over, both by De Lesseps and the Nicaragua canal promoters, and the results of a careful sta- tistical investigation will be awaited with interest. ws Dispelled a Delusion.
