REFUSE OF A BIG CITY. A Description of San Franciscow Great Incinerating ¥ ant. An int Mg account of how San Francisco disposed of its garbage is giv by the Sei tifle American, ¢ which tive following is an al ac Th incinerating plant is owned by a corporation, wh teined the privilege by agreeing to the city “0 in cash and 2 p the gross receipts for the first tift and 5 per cent of the gross for the remaining years of its = tract. A block of ground was bought in southern portion of the city, and was erected the largest garbage inci in the world The main buildings ¢ msist of t crating houses, with the chimney They form iogether thre sof » fect long by WS feet wide Stories in heigh There wm in each incinerating house, mak in all. with a grate area of ‘ agErcKaling 3.072 o grates. A furnace nas been erected for the melting of solder from the ns and is now in operation. Tin baling works are also in operation, where t nis bulge and shipped to fou i mae tute window weighis. ‘The i roa? ways platforms, offices and buildings er an area of 400 by 200 feet. The total invest- ment of the company has been abou? $150,000, The maximum capa f tha furnaces and auxiliaries is 700 re but the entire output of the , refuse of San Francisco t reached that figure © Sea : commence arriving at d and te liveries are practically o the afte oen The we by a high board fence the office of the con entrance the wa roadways to the top of ing houses, whese th wagors are dumped down On either these take t and ot comme: ve. s Ules, rags, bones, an is sold to the Chinese t te utes oie t pany, drive x two he eut the hoppers garh enter. The c selve tangular f arched at an angi pers sloy the rear of the gts at of about 45 degre i upper nds in a charg On each s of these hoppers Opening into a main fue The products of combustion from cells pass by means of main flue to the crematory furnaces aad thence to th chimney. After one charge of the garbage sand refuse is burned in a cell enough of it is left in the siape of rs and live coals to ignite the next charge coming In this way the fires never go out, ar embers from one cell can alw to assist the burning fn another cell. A charge consisis of about three tons, and can be thoroughly incinerated, according to the character of the material, in from two and one-haif to four hours. The me- siduum from this burning consists of ash and clinker, both of commercial value, the former proving an excellent base for @ fertilizer. while the latter, ground up and mixed with i® per cent of lime, makes @ very excellent mortar; or, mixed with con- crete and clay in proper proportions, can be made into an ornamental brick of any color desired. After the works had been in operation for a few months it was found that the entire output of the city could be burned in the daytime, the furnaces being charged at night and regulated to burn till morn- ing. This made a big cut in the pay roll The incinerator at San Francisco is the only one in the United States burning gar- bage and refuse without other fuel than the material itself. No artifi fuel of any kind can be used here © is no place for it. All the other « in the United States incinerating gar and refuse have to use either coal, ¢ wood, oil or gas. Several of the English systems claim to burn without fuel, but in all of them it has been found necessary to use more or less fuel for the purpose of forc- ing a draught by means of a fan, which is not in use in the San Francisco works. Since the work commenced in November the fires have never been extinguish repairs have been needed, but constant tm- provements are being made by the com- pany in labor-saying apparatus and in tn- creasing the commercial value of the residuum. The works were built originally en low-lying ground covered at certain seasons of the year with water to a depth of from 2 to 3% feet. The company has been using its ashes and clinker up to this time to fill in its own land and contiguous blocks, and it has found that for the pur- pose of filling the residuum has no superior; but the company is now about to erect fertilizing works, using ite ashes as a base, and it is also considering the advisability of erecting works for the con- verting of the clinker into bricks and mortar. ew Moody Choir May Continue. At a meeting last evening at the First Baptist Church more than 200 members of the Moody Choir favored the continuing of that organization in some form. Mr. Perey 8. Foster presided and remarks were made by Rev. N. C. Naylor, W. H. Proctor, Prof. H. A. Hazen and Dr. M. D. Peck. It was finally agreed that a soctal gathering should be held by the members of the choir aboat the middle of November, at which time the future of the Moody Choir will be discussed and decided upon. —_——>——_ Wants Quickly Filled.
