Special Dispatch to The Evening Star. CUMBERLAND. Md., October 17.—The re- publican campaign in Garrett county ended Saturday night with a most enthusiastic meeting in Ravenscroft’s Opera House, Qak- land, addressea by Col. George A. Pearre, congression’a: candidate, 2nd Senator Geo. L. Wellingtcn. Many ladies were present. Col. A. G. Sturgiss presided. Pearre was introduced as “our gallant standard bearer,” and received with hearty cheers. He denied that the indifference and apathy as described by the Jemocratic brethren. existed, bus, on the contrary, he addresse: large and enthusiastic meetings throughout the county. Col. Pearre’s address was Ce- voted almost entirely to the money ques- tien He said that in 1896 the paramount tssue was whether the people approved Bryan- ism and a depreciated currency. He elo- quently described the ardor manifested in that campaign adherents of both sid and said that issues of that campaig th were identical with those in this. The de: ocratic party have made a change in policy, noi of principle. He coatinvcd: “In 1896 the democratte party unequivecally declared for the free and unlimited coir of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1, and the republicans took the an- tithetical point and declared their w ified opposition to that financial heresy nqui and edged themselves to sustain 2 sound fiiancial system and an undegraded and urdeprectated currency Democratic Policy Changed. “The policy of the democrats has chang- ed. They wish to mislead the peonle as to their position on this great financial ques- tion. The platform of the sixth district convention readoption of the state convention platform, which was a straddle. li was so vdjusied as to enable them to say to the soft money or free silver men that it declared for free stlver. “It is proper to ask if Mr. P: frenberger ts in favor of scund money. Every citizen ought to know how his candidate stands on this impor question. I think I am just in assuming that my worthy opponent is today as he was in 18% and has hang- ed his political coat. My worthy nent wes then one of the strongest advocates of Bryan, and went through Washington coun- ty as an avowed soft money or free silver man. Col. Pearre said that the democrats claim- 1 to have takea the republican party hy “the scruff of the neck” ami forced them into the war with Spain. He said. let us admit this for the sake of angument. He was proud par the fact that the republican was a party of peace, and that under | the direction of that well-poised mind, that William McKinley, they did everything they could to avert war. He reviewed the splendid mar rer with which the republican administration took charge of the war, and charged that the democrats, although not locking in patriotista, could’ not resist. the temptation to tack on a desizned to raise revi nm thé principle of fiat mon- e3. The original plan was to throw a bomb of gun cotton and fulminate of mercury on Emperor William's carriage in a narrow street of Cairo. When the Egyptian trip was abandoned elaborate ar- rangements were made by the conspirators to send confederates to Jerusalem to carry out the plot during the dedication of the German Church of Our Redeemer.
