The Typhoid Fever, He Says, Was Brought There From Other States —War-Time Conditions. After The Star's report of proceedings of the war investigating commission was closed yesterday afternoon General H. V. Boynton continued his testimony regard- ing conditions at Camp Thomas, Chicka- mauga Park, of which he has lately been in command, and where for some time he has had charge of the water sup- ply. In reply to a question by ex-Governor Beaver, General Boynton said that the water of the Chickamauga river had been examined four times and found to be with- out contamination. He was sure there was ro way by which the water supply of the camp could have been contaminated from any wash from the camp. “I think,” said General Boynton, in re- ply to a question, “both the quantity and quality of water at Camp Thomas were am- ple nd fit for domestic uses. There is this thing to say about the supply. There was a great Geal of water about the middle of the period the troops were there hauled from outside the camp, from springs at various distances from camp. There had been sickness in camp and regi- mental surgeons and subordinate officers, without investigation, condemned the wells and hauled water from outside the camp. This was done simply because there was sickness and the wells were under suspi- cion. The ana made after that showed that the wells were all right.” General Boynton described the way in which the artesian wells In Camp Thomas were bored They were from fifty to one hundred and fifty-nine feet deep, nearly the entire depth being through solid rock. The analyses showed that the river, well and spring water they got was about the same thin, Captain Howell—"Do you not know that typhoid ‘fever was brought into Camp Thomas by troops? Typhoid Brought From State Camps. Gen. Boynton—‘Certainly; it is well known that typhoid fever was brought to Camp Thomas from state camps.” Gen. Boynton was asked in relation to details of the camp arrangements, the Jo- cation of sinks, kitchens, manner of dis- posing of offal, ete. ee Regarding typhoid fever in Camp Thomas Gen. Boynton said that up to July 15 there Were about two cases of typhoid fever in each thousand men in camp. The sickness at that time was not greater than is ex- perienced by soldiers in barracks. Gen. Boynton, in reply_to questions, de- scribed the hospitals of Camp Thomas. Ex-Gov. Beaver asked if there were sut- lers to supply the men. fe Bo “There was something worse,” said Gen. Boynton. “There were canteens, author- ized by the army.” Gen. Boynton said 372 carloads of beer were brought into Camp Thomas Capt. Howell asked what whisky got into the cam: Gen. moonshiners down in your country are pretty sharp fellows, Cap- tain Howell, and they managed to get ahead of us sometime: The wi id that whisky was kept out of the camp except such as found its way there for medicinal purposes or sur- reptitiously. nin, ne among the drank the river, ever he had aking of Gen. A New York Herald special from Playa nee One of the most hor- rible things about the nervous diseases to which women are peculiarly subject is the sense of overwhelming despair which they bring w; A woman’s mental directl; mn the pated condition is and powerfully affected by any ailment of the delicate, cial organs of her sex. Such a difficult not only racks her body with pain and suf- fering but burdens her with mental anguish which words can hardly describe. Thousands of women have had a similar experience to that of Mra. Eurath A. Williams, of Westport, Oldham Co., Ky., in which the use of Dr. Pierce’s wonderful “Favorite Prescription,” by imparting health and strength to the feminine organ- ism, has not only restored complete vigor and capacity to the bodily powers but has also given renewed brightness and buoy- ancy of spirit. “Isuffered for over a year,” says Mrs. Williams, with indigestion and nervous prestration. I was unable to eat or sleep. I tried several phys- icians, but they only helped me for a short time. A friend advised me to take Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription, Dr.'Pierce's Golden Medical Dis- covery and ‘Pellets,’ I commenced taking the medicines last May. Took three bottles of the “Favorite Prescription,’ three of the ‘Golden Medical Discovery,’ and three vials of the ‘ Pel- lets," and am now ‘feeling better than I have for two years. Have a good appetite, sleep well, and do not suffer from indigestion or nervous: ness. I have gained seven and a half pounds since taking these medicines. Mr. Hobson's success in that feature of his work is shown by the fact that the guns so far recovered from the wrecks of the Infanta Maria Teresa, the Vizcaya and the Almirante Oquendo are valued at $300,000, Another expedition was sent today to work on the wreck of the Cristobal Colon, and some of the men who have been at work on the Infanta Maria Teresa were Sent to the Vizcaya today. Divers will be sent tomorrow to make another examina- tion of the Vizcaya. Naval Constructor Hobson ts now confi- dent that he will not only be able to save the Cristobal Colon, but also the Reina Mercedes, which was sunk by the Span- iards. A report reached here this afternoon that there is trouble in Havana, but the nature of it could not be learned. The auxiliary cruiser Scorpion, which arrived here this Morning, recetved orders to sail for Ha- vana immediately. The cruiser Newark sailed yesterday for Port Antonio. se DEATH CAME BEFORE THE SHIP. Miss Caskey's Race to Reach a Brother’s Bedside. There was a sad homecoming for Miss Ella Caskey, a passenger on the steam- ship Barbarossa, which arrived at New York yesterday from Bremen. Miss Caskey, who was on a visit abroad, was notified by cable to return immediately as her brother, Corporal H. R. Caskey, Company H, 20th Infantry, was danger- ously ill. Corporal Caskey arrived frum Santiago by the transport Concho on July #1, and was transferred to Hoffman Island, thence to the military hospital at Fort Wadsworth. The first steamer sailing to the -west- ward was the Harbarossa. Miss Caskey caught it and came hurrying homeward. Her father, who lives in Pittspurg, Pa. Was at quarantine to meet her.
