All this is due to the fact that Col. Pettit and his battalion commanders, ut. Col. Cole, Maj. Langden and Maj. Parker, ar> army officers, and have had the practical exper- ienc2 of handling and caring for the com- forts of large bodies of men—also to the careful attention he gave when selecting his medical staff, which is composed of Maj. From the Christin Intelligence it is said that there are 1,700 clergymen of the Church of England who are mem- ers of the confraternity of the blessed sac! ment, organized to destroy the work of the Reformation. They are allfes of the Church of Rome, and in belief and practice agree with that body. Many efforts have r. been made to prevent these clergymen from continuing their Romish practices in the chure| of the Church of England, but with only small success. The bishops of the state church are apparently indifferent to the attempts to Romanize the Church of England. It is claimed that the large ma- jority of the membership is opposed to the efforts of the confraternity and allied so- cieties, such as the Holy Cross and the rit- ualistic sisterhoods, but can accomplish nothing because the bishops thwart their endeavors or wishes. There is unquestion- ably decided tendency among the clergy of the Church of England toward the Re man church. The other denominations of Christians in Great Britain have formed a federation to oppose this sacerdotalism and endeavor to Romanize the Christian people of Great Britain. The membership of the churches of this alliance is now larger than that of the Church of England, and that majority bids fair to increase steadily. The prospect is that in a few years the Episco- pal Church will cease to be the Established Church of Great Britain. Nomination for Congress. Frederick H. Gillett of Springfield, Mass., was renominated yesterday by the republi- cans of the second district. joseph H. Walker was reyominated for Congress yesterday by the republicans of the third Massachusetts district. SSS ae AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c. ‘Today. ‘Thos. J.
