All Sections Represented in a Com- mittee of the National Coun- ceil of Education, During the convention in Washington last summer of the National Educational Asso- ciation the National Council of Education also met, and upon motion of Prof. Charles De Garmo, the retiring president of the council, a resolution was passed to ap- point a committee of fifteen to make a thorough inquiry Into the proposed national university scheme and to report to the council hereafter. The membership of the committee has just been announced, and is representative both of the best educational thought of the country and of the various &eographical sections. It is constituted as follows: President William R. Harper of the Uni- versity of Chicago (chairman), President Edwin A. Alderman of the University of North Carolina, President James B. Angeli of the University of Michigan, Prof. Nich- olas Murray Butler of Columbia Untiver- sity, President James H. Canfield of Ohio State University, Dr. J. L. M. Curry of Washington, D. Moses of the Universit of California, President J. G. Schurman of Cornell University, Superintendent F. Louis Soldan of St. Louis, Mo.; President William L. Wilson of Washington and Lee Univer- sity. The Comnittee’s Functions. It 1s understood to be the function ot this committee to take up its work in a thoroughly unbfased spirit. It has not been constituted to favor any particular scheme or to oppose any special plan. It will naturally expect to deal thoroughly with two distinct questions to come—(1) Should there be a national university tablished under government aus and (2) If so, what should be its scope and the form of its organization? It is believed to be high time that the whole subject should be taken up vigorously and intelligently by a competent and representative com- mittee, and a report prepared that will iluminate and guide subsequent discus- sions of the subject, as well as influence any legislative action that may be taken. Personnel of the Body. The committce as announced contains the names of eight college or unive: y presidents, three university professors, three public school superintendents and one (Dr. Curry) who falls in none of these classes. One 1s a New Englander, three represent the middie states, three the south, seven the central west and one the Pacific slope. From such a committee an authoritative report may well be expected. ee THE ANNUAL PARADE. Joint Demonstration of Police and Fire Departments. The flag will after the coming parade be kept for the future at police: headquarters, and the officers of the station who display the greatest proficiency in drill during Tie parade will have the honor of forming a color guard, which will earryiit to the Dis- trict building and present it to the super- intendent. : x The parade will be reyiewed by the Com- missioners and invited guests.
