Immense Crowds Visit and Approve the Big Establishment of the Progressive Firm. The announcements so constantly made and reiterated in the past few months by Parker, Bridget & Co. that they proposed to open a new establishment which would equal, if not surpass, anything in its linc in this section of the country naturally ex- cited expectation of an unusually high character on the part of the Washington public. The opening last night at the cor- ner of 9th street and Pennsylvania avenue proved to the immense-throngs who atiend- ed it that the firm had not exaggerated in the statements alluded to, but that the re- ality in fact outstripped the promises. ‘The attendance was unusually large for such an occasion and attested the popu- larity of the firm In an emphatic degree. It was necessary to have a detail of poilce- men to keep passage way through the crowds on 9th street and Pennsyivania ave- nue, and when the doors were opened at 8 o'clock there was a crush for two hours. The universal opinion expressed was that the new store of Parker, Bridget & Co. was both a credit to the enterprise of its owners and to the city. Everything was new from bottom to top. Every garment and article in the tremen- dous stock was spick an dspan, fresh from the manufacturers. Every floor had been completely metamorphosed by the build- ers, who had followed plans arranged with most artistic taste. The entire interipr, finished in oak, with harmoniously decorated walls and ceilings, was striking in its effect from every direc. tion, while the arrangements for the con- venience and comfort of customers had been made with the greatest care. The vast establishment was profusely decorated with foliage plants and cut flow- ers, and there was an abundance of floral designs sent by friends of the firm as con- gratulatory tokens. Striking among these, in a prominent place on the main floor, was a superb horseshoe of roses, carna” tions, ferns and ivy, bearing a card, “Com- pliments of employes.”” Haley's Washington Orchestra discoursed sweet music during the evening and hand- some souvenirs were given to the visitors. The ladies were presented with embellished calendars of 1899, in the center of each be- ing a photograph of either President Mc- Kinley, Vice President Hobart, Secretary Long, ‘Admirals Dewey, Schley, Sampson or General Miles, while the gentlemen were presented with match boxes, on which was @ finely executed silver bas-relief of Ad- miral Dewey. The members of the firm were overwhelmed with congratulations, earnest and sincere, and they unquestion- ably deserved them all. The property owners in the vicinity of 27th street are now looking forward to the time when the street will be dignified by having sidewalks. Formerly the street had no walk for pedestrians, but a path on either side of the highway was used. Now that a roadway has been laid off and curb~ ing laid, with a macadam surface between, the pedestrians are deprived of a walkway. The street with the macadam surface is covered with several inches of fine dust from the powdered stones, making walking even worse than on a country road. The appropriation for opening up the street, it was thought, carried with it a sufficient sum to locate brick sidewalks, but this has not been done.
