Harries of First Regiment Makes Brief Address. MR. J. W. TOLSON PRESIDES The residents of Anacostia taxed the capacity of Masonic Hall, at the corner of Jackson and Pierce streets, last night such as it has never been taxed before, and ac- epréed the returned soldier heroes who enlisted from that section of the District after the declaration of war a reception worthy of the volunteers’ patriotism and bravery. Under the eye of the colonet who had marked their service from the time they left the national capital, through the severe routine of camp life in southern climes and later in the muddy trenches before Santiago, as well as in the journey back to home, the men received handsome silver medals, amid the plaudits of the as- semblage. There were only six men— all of the Ist District of Columbia Vol- unteers—zo honoréd last night. There ought to have been about twelve members of the regiment present, but it is stated that some of the boys who were willing enough to face Spanish bullets and take their chances with dread disease flinched from the ceremonies incident to the public presentation of medals, such as took place last night. Others were kept away by filness, it was stated. It was a proud Moment indeed for the orated wi x who were dec- hin a few feet of their com- er, Colonel George H. But while we rejoice, let us not forget the ones who are absent by reason of sickness, but jet us pray that they may be restored to health and home." ‘The audienee then arose and sang with great fervor “America,” with band accom- paniment. Chairman olson then made the an- nouncement that the medals would next be presented, and he read aloud a list of the names of the soldier boys who had return- ed. Maj. R. A. Pyles and Privates Carl Marbury, Claude Ailen, Hoopes and Kiem- kientz responded to their names and lined up before the stage. As each name was called out the audience gave vent to its feelings by cheers. Six young ladies, one tor each, pinned the teken of honor on the coats of the men this honored. The names of these young ladies are Misses Bertha Swindells, Katie Rhodes, Lizzie Walson, Linda Pumophrey, Alice Danforth and Jjen- nie Bartley. A Maltese Cross. Dr. Watson presented the handsome floral offering to Colonel Harries in the following graceful way: “Col. It affords me great pleasure to do so, and to expr¢ the wish, which I know is echoed by all the citizens of Anacostia, that these beau- tiful buds and the fragrance stealing from them may serve to remind you of esteem and grateful remembrance in which you are held by all our citizens for the manner in which you, as nel of the ist District of Columbia Volunte to your country’s cail and over anJ cared for the men your command, including soldier boys from Anacc id that unlike the grant odor, the to many of the tia.
