John J. Brosnan fol- lowed in an essay on Daniel O'Connell, pre- dicting the freedom of Ireland, and, after a reading by Arthur J. May, 1900, Ber- nardin F. Here, then, was a crisis. If t narrow channel could be blocked at once, and if Cervera, the Spanish commander of this fleet, and his ships could be prevented from coming out again into the open seas, his purposes of destruction for us would thwarted was done a deed of valor which told as long as history writes of m of men. Young Assist ructor Richard P. Hobso: Eve at to the dy with Beven fe sen men, prepared the Merrimac, which be jected for the purpose, and ry on board, with the frosp: or certain death, ran the doome boat under the awful fire of frowning bat- teries that lined both sides of the entrance to the harbor and sank the Merrimac ie ne right po: completely bive! up this narrow channel, making ingre egress for large vessels impossibl-. Mar- Velous to teil, Hotson and his sevea heip- ers al! escaped alive, though they were taken prisoners by the enemy. A bloodless victory t might other- Wise have cost unnumbered lives was thus won over the most powerful fleet that Spain could send against us in this war for the freedom of Cuba. The sinking of the Merrimac at the very spot and in the Precise way designated was the work of exact engineering skill in which ¢ach of the eight men did his part, just as direci- d, exa at the right moment. At 2 o'clock im the morning, when this deed of ng was to be done, everything had d from the vessel that was to shut up the Spanish fleet to its fate; only the eight h Were on board, each bis post, ready to do his part in this mo- Mentous tragedy. othe, last officer from our fleet clambered wer the side of the vessel, and in leav said to young Hobson ph “Shall we send you some breakfast? We can, just as well as not.” “No,” replied Hobson, “never mind about the breakfast, but send us soment 27eU* Twenty-five years ago a man in his po- sition would have said—‘some whisky to brace us up,” but instead, in this year of our Lord i808, breaking from old tradi- tons, he said—“some coffee.” In 1886 a speech was made before a Sen- ate committee in the national Congrese, and printed by order of Congress, which contained tne following paragraph; it Teads now like prophec: “Mr.Chairman and gentl-men of the com- mittee: © * * The judgment day alone will reveal how many precious human lives of men bearing arms have been sacrificed, how many battles have been lost, how many times the tide of conflict has changed because the commanding officer was ig- norant of the real nature of alcohol, be- cause he thoughf his brain would be clear- er, that his alm would be steadier, if he fortified himself with the alcohol that par- alyzed his nerves, that muddled his brain, that really unfitted him to be the director of a conflict. In our military and naval schools are young men who are to be to us we know not what in the future before this country. We cannot today tell what pessible hour may come when our national destiny will depend upon the clear, steady brain of some officer who is a boy today in training in our military or naval schools. ‘Therefore,we ask that a law may be enact- €d which shall make the nature of alcoholic drinks and other rarcotics and their ef- fects upon the human system, in connec- tion with physiology and hygiene, a manda- tery stu@y for all pupils in our national millitary and naval academies, and that this branch shall be taught with suitable text books in the hands of these pupils.” The law was passed, and has for twelve years been binding upon all pupils in eur military and naval academies ut West Point and Annapolis. These iwelve years past must have included the years that Lieut. Hobson was a studious naval cadet at the latter institution. The writer is in possession of a letter written in April, 1808, by Admiral (then captain) Sampson, who was at that time superintendent of our naval academy at Annapolis. This letter was accompanied h an outline of the course of study pur- -ed in that institution, on the nature ind effects of alcoholic drinks and other nar- coties upon the human system. Captain Sampson's letter says of it: “The whole course is taught in a thoroughly scientific Manner and by competent instructors.” Aided by good men in committees en mil- itery and naval affairs in Congress, a cer- tain American citizen has watched to see that the text books cn this subject used by these cadets shall be abreast with the latest findings of modern science concern- ing the nature and physiological effects of alcoholic drinks and other narcotics. ‘Therefore, young Hobson hag had defi- nite and positive scientific instruction as to the effect of whisky or of any drink con- taining alcohol in deadening sense rercep- ticn, impairing nerve control and muscuiar precision and in clouding the judgmen: On that June night on the Caribbean sea, off the coast of Cuba, an hour of national as well as individual destiny was pending. If ever men needed keen sense perception, rerfect nerve control, precision in muscular action and cool judgmnt, these men did then, and Hobson's knowledge that alcohol hinders rather than helps these rendered the nation good service at that critical hour, for the event shows that not a nerve or muscle of the eight men failed to do its essential duty then and there. ‘The marksmanship of our nava! cadets at Manila has challenged the admiration of the world. They, too, as gracuaies from nnapolis, must have learned the same les- Jn: The pessimists who claim that in fol- lowing the goddess of peac> the spirit of noble daring, of courageous adventure, has died out of the character of vcr people ere mistaken. For unpretending self-efface ment, fer skillful daring and achievement, history has nowhere a record that out- ranks this noble deed of Lieut. Hobson ard his companions. Our modern kings, with the blood cf the old Norsemen in their veins, have shown not only that they are able, as were their ancestors, to conquer and outgeneral their enemies of the Latin race, but that, in ad- dition, they are more intelligent masters of themselves than were their ancestors, June 20, 1898. MARY H. HUNT. ss A Modern Japanese Steamship. ant. From the Hartford € The Mitsubishi Company of Japan has just Jaunched a steel armored steamer 462 feet long and 49 feet beam, with double screws, triple expansion engines and in ev- ery way equal to the best product of west- ern shipyards except perhaps in the mat- ter of speed, which is restricted to fourteen knots. She is intended for trade between Yokohama and London, and in case of war can be converted into an armored cruiser. As might have been expected, the first ship was built at a considerable loss to’ the com- pany, but the experience obtained 1s con- sidered to be worth the cost. They havi resulved to expend on future ships exactly the sum similar ships would cost to build in Englard, depending not on a tariff, but on the saving in bringing the ship to Japan for extra profit, and assert that hereafter they can build better ships for the same cost than can be furnishel on the Clyde. The idea of putting an armor belt on a merchant steamer and protecting the boilers and en- gines is a good one and will enable the Jap- panese to convert her into an armored cruiser, not merely a commerce destroyer, when one is needed. The vessel is also built with a view to carrying an armament of considerable weight when necessary. Se Hot Water in Arizona Wel From the Omaha Bee. The wells in parts of Arizona have recent- ly become producers of hot water, and ap- prehension is felt by many of the residents of the region affected that they are about to become participants in a grand volcanic drama. In some of the wells the tempera- ture of the well water rose twenty degrees in a single night. In a few the phenome- non disappeared soon after its appearance. In a majority of cases, however, the wells fairly steam from their newly acquired heat. The first known of this curious state of affairs was a report that the wells at Maricopa, on the Southern Pacific railroad, thirty miles south of Phoenix, had sudden- ly become hot. {twas four days thereafter that the phe- nomenon first was noticed a dozen miles west of that city. A test at one well show- ed a temperature of nearly 100 degrees. No difference is noted in wells in the Im- mediate vicinity of Phoenix. The line of subterranean heat wave fol- lows the general direction of the Sierra Es- trella mountains, a volcanic chain lying im- mediately south ‘of the Gila river. Thence it appears to continue on in the direction of the Harqua Hala mountains, near which are a number of large and modern volcanic cones and hills of drifted volcanic ash. Further to the east the lava flows are so geologically modern as to have overwhelm- ed in a number of places the cliff dwellings of the ancients. ———_+e+—____ A Mean Trick on the Boy From the Philadelphia Record. A down-town contractor got a large amount of work done for nothing a short time ago, at the same time making himself solid with a gang of patriotic youngsters. Recently the schemer bought the materials from an old building that was being torn down, and in the lot were several thousand bricks. These were cleaned and neatly piled in the street. Now, the contractor owns a vacant lot, on which he intends building shortly, and for this will use the old bricks he purchased. The lot is nearly a mile dis- tant from where the bricks are, and as hauling is expensive the contractor put a brilliant scheme in operation to save this expense. His twelve-year-old son belongs to a small urmy of patriotic youngsters who style themselves “the Cuban invad- ers.” There are about 125 of the boys, and various attempts of theirs to build forts have been thwarted by the police. The con- tractor, through his son, offered them tho use of his lot for a while, and generously said they might use the old bricks to build the fort if they would carry them to the lot. The enthustasm of the army was in- tense, and the next day being Saturday the boys set to work with wagons. After hool on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the boys continued hauling, and by this time the bricks had all been moved. Thurs- day the walls of the fort began to go up, but the work received a sudden check. The contractor, with sorrow plainly writ- ten on his face, told the army that the neighbors had complained to the police, and that he had received official notice to abate the nuisance. —-*e* The Queen Bumble Bee. e ‘rom St. Nicholas. The length of life of a queen bumble bee is probably litue more than a year at most. Here 1s one reason for this belief. She hatches among the late broods of summer, and soon after leaves the nest, leading a vagabond existence, night and day, among the autumn flowers. The winter she passes in an earth burrow dug by herself, and vraiced establishes a colony in the spring. ‘Tkese combined periods of fall and spring require the daily use of her frail wings in the fleid at least four months. Now, we know that the wirgs of the worker honey bee wear out In less than half that time; a'so that the old queens who take to the field after the nest breaks up in August frequently have tattered wings and soon disappear. Nature does not supply insects with new wing cells, as it supplies birds with new wing feathers. So the loss of the power of flight at this season of the year to the queen bumble bee means the toss of life. AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c.
