MEDALS AND PREMIUMS Columbia Theater was crowded yester- y afternocn with the relatives and friends of the pupils of the Immaculate Conception school. An enjoyable program was rendered, and the drills, danc d marches, with which it was replete, illus- trated the care with which the partici- pants kad been trained, as well 2s their own fidelity to their teaching. The nomination of Dr. Hering of Carroll would be a great credit to the party and he would make a strong candidate. He ts not anxious to run, however, and while he will not refuse the nomination, he will be reluctant to take it. He told The Star cor- respondent in a recent conversation that the cnly place he would willingly fill was the state controllership, and he will prob- ably make a contest for that nomination a year hence. Mr. John 8. Wirt has an- nounced that he is in no sense a candidate, and will not accept the nomination. He is also looking ahead and has his eye on the executive mansion at Annapolis. The Third District. A little flutter of excitement is in the air over the prospect of the Malster men in the third district turning down Con- gressman Booze when the latter comes up for renomination. This opposition is based upon the congressman's identification with the “administration” wing of the party and is to be taken as a slap at Senator Wellington. The Malster strongholds lic in the district which extends over the slums, and the partisans of the mayor can eastly obstruct Booze's progress. It is re- ported that the Malster men may take up Police Commissioner W. W. Johnson as an opposition candidate. There is absolutely no speculation at present as to the action of the democrats. There is not much pros- pect of their carrying the district and very little interest as to the personnel of their ticket. it is not thought that the Malster men will oppose the renomination of Congress- man McIntire in the fourth, and he now expects easy sailing. The democrats here, as in the third, are keeping pretty quiet. Mr. Isaac Tobe Straus, an able young law. yer, is occasionally mentioned for their nomination, and Lawrason Riggs, briga- dier general of the Maryland. National Guard, has also been spoken of. Lively in Fifth. Matters in the fifth promise to be lively by reason of the fight to be waged against Congressman Mudd by the administration wing and the possible entrance of ex-Gov- ernor John Lee Carroll as a eandidate for the democratic nomination. The fight sgainst Mudd promises to be bitter. There is no love lost between the governor and Senator Wellington cn one side and the crafty southern Maryland leader on the other, and if they can manage to retire him from the field they will do so with sreat satisfaction. The present scheme fs to unite the anti-Mudd sentiment. in. th district behind ex-State Senator. Thomas Parran of Calvert county. With Parran in the field and State Senators Wilkinson of St. Mary's and of Howard working in his interests Congressman Mudd may ‘find it dificult to control the convention and head the ticket. Should ex-Governor Care roll decide to run the prospects of the dis. trict’s going to the democracy will be ap- preciably heightened. Scott, jr., who has been named for naval officer at the Port of Baltimore, and discussion as to his successor Is rife. Senator Wellington has been mentioned in this connection, but he is not desirous of resuming his old posi- tion an the helm. Personally, it is reported he is in favor of the election of Mr. J. Stuart McDonald, president of the Locai Union League, and the administration wing ts also in favor of such an election is Malster men are backing Congressman The fight over this question is the old Malster-administration fight, and is pre- cipitated by the anxiety of either faction to control affairs for the city election next spring. The congressional elections in the fall constitute a mere incident in this fight. The Malster men are anxious to retain the upper hand, and the chairmanship of the committee is essential in obtaining this. The old repubiican city committee will probably serve uftil next year. The democratic committee is expected to meet June 30, and the gathering is likely to be important. Senator Gorman is ex- pected to be present, and some definite ac- tion will be taken. On his action in sust ning the national administration, it is Probable that the sen- ator’s stand will be heartily indorsed by the committee. Politically the democrats are decidedly at sea. Silver sentiment is either dead or moribund, and 16 to 1 oratory and allusions to Bryan are conspicuous by their absence, and those who have declared all along that the free coinage doctrine has had no genuine hold on the rank and file of the party in the state regard the present status as a vindication, and assert that the silver issue is dead in Maryland for all time to come. oe ° HOBSON AND HIS CREW SAFE. They Are Now Imprisoned in the Barracks at Santingo. Mr. Ramsden, the British consul at San- tiago de Cuba, sent the following Cispatch to the New York Herald y-sterdoy: Assistant Naval Constructor Hobson anJ his seven companions, who sunk the col- lier Merrimac across the entrance of the harbor, were prisoners Morro Castle dering the bombardment by the American fleet June 6.
