There was a lively scene in John Pretty’s cook shop. ai No. 4 Q street northwest, about 1 o'clock this morning, which ended in the shooting of the proprietor of the place and John Flagg and the arrest of Bernard Brooks for the alleged murderous assaults. Flagg received a flesh wound in the arm, while Pretty is said"to have been shot through one lung. Both injured men were removed tc Freedmen's Hospital. It is said that a quarrel about a woman caused the trouble. Policemen Lightfoot and Cooper ‘were standing near the house when they heard the reports of ‘the pistol shots. Hastening to the house, they found Brooks and ean- other young colored man, named John Bai- ley, on the sidewaik in front of the eating saloon. John Flagg was also there, and when told that Brooks had done the shoot- ing the officers placed him under arrest. Then they gave Flagg their attention, to ascertain the extent of his injuries, Pretty had apparently disappeared, but before post 3 the house the detectives thought they would go on an investigating tour. Entering a room in the rear of the eating saloon, they found the proprietor stretched on a sofa, suffering from a bullet wound. He was in great pain, and was al- most too weak to talk. A few minutes later the patrol wagon reached the scene of the shooting, and the wounded men were removed to the hospital, while Brooks was taken to the second precinct station and lecked up. The police made an effort to ascertain the cause of the shooting. From state- ments made by several witnesses it appears that several rene men are interested in one woman, and this awry they met at Pretty’s house and quarreled about at Bernard Brooks drew his revolver ant two shots. Many Who Answer Description of a| Belief That a Fight Has Occurred of Richmond Murderer. “Tranps’ Camp,” near Twining City, has turned out three mere colored men who were alleged to be the murderers of Police- jan Austin in Richmond, Va., Since the officer was murdered fully a hundred colored men, many of them answering the description of the fugitive murderer, have graced the dock of the Police Court. In each case the Richmond officers failed to place the party under arrest. Five colored prisoners were sent to court this morn- ing by Policeman Owens and they gave their names as Richard Shaw, Edward Williams, Walter Williams, Thomas Dock- ery Garfield Barge. “Your honor,” said the officer, ‘Inspect- or Mattingly wants you to hold three of these men beceuse they answer the de- scription of the Richmond murderer. You may do as you please with the others.” ‘The officer's charge was that the de- fendantg had been begging from door to door in Twining City. “The policeman said he arrested me for somethin’ about a murder,” said one of oe Senay, evidently a countryman, “but I don’t know nothin’ "bout it.” “We are not trying you here for murder,” the court told him. 1d Barge, who claimed to have come here from Virginia on a freight train, said he was on his way to Baltimore, where he has a brother.
