14 SS SSS SSS = THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, MAY 13, 1898-16 PAGES. MYSTERIOUS MACKEREL. ‘They Appear at but Two Points and Nobody Knows Whence They Com Frm the Fishing Gazette. The keenest interest now centers in the mackerel fishery. The first fare of the sea- son was landed at the Fulton fish market slip on Tuesday of last week, ten days in advance of ihe first cargo last year and only five days behind the earliest catch on record. Not for years has the outcome of the season's operations been so widely dis- cussed as now. There are reasons for it, of course. They are to be found in the fact t f late years the supply of salt mackerel has been inadequate for the needs of consumption. Prices, owing to the scarc- ity of the fish, have gradually risen to a point above the means of the poorer classes -the largest consumers of salt| mackerel— and the fish have become a luxury, almost, on the tabies of the well-to-do. Year after year since the season of 1889 (the year when the fishery first began to now signs of a decline) fishermen and fish dealers have watched the advent of each season hopefully. The movements of the sh as they approached the coast have ly observed, and signs shat in seasons of greatest success foreshad- owed or attended the coming of the schools have been more or less in evidence. Old fishermen who have followed the schools up and down the coast until their hair has grown white as the foam-capped have gravely read the riddle of these and have fitted out their craft and pursued the capricious fish throughout each season with only by a vague sort of intuition which they cannot impart. Its movements are to them a mystery. They know some- thing of its habits, when it may be expect- ed to appear off the coast, and that is about all In this respect the fishery department is no better off. It is known that the fish have a migration along the coast north- ward in the spring and southward in the autumn. It is believed that their appear- ance each year is due to the marvelous in- stinct of reproduction which they possess in common with other fishes: but what has caused the alarming diminution in the size of the schools that annually visit our shores is a question on which science and fishermen ure mute, It is not a little dis- appointing to know that with the much- vaunted power of our nineteenth century scientific knowledge the apparent mystery of the mackerel has not been solved. This much we do know. In the early part of March the fish in greater or less numbers strike the southern coast in the ity of Cape Henry; by the middle of ¢ schools reach ‘the Capes of Dela- nd slowly advance past Barnegat Sandy Hook. About the middle of according to the movements of the in past years, a school will arrive off Yarmouth, N. S., but whence it comes is buried in mystery. From the size and ge eral character of the fish composing the school, it is apparent that they do not be- = to the great littoral schools which ad- nee from the south. Therefore it is pre- ned that they come from somewhere to the eastward in the deep sea. Stmultaneously with the appearance of this latter school the host of southern tor: ving by that time gone as far north as ntucket, will vanish with a suddenness quite as mysterious as the ap- pearance of the school off Yarmouth, only to reappear again perhaps in the pay-in- dented shores of Massachusetts. Thence- forward until well into the month of Au- fust the waters will be quented by the fish. The roving habits of this fish are well known. They appear in and disappear from certain localities and leave no sign, 0 that it is impossible to y with any de- gree of certainty that the reving schools which first visit the bays of New England are identical with those that remain throughout the seasen. Of this much we more or less fre- ure tive: the ments of the fish are practically the same now as they were dur- ing the period when the mackerel fishery first assumed any degree of importance, ubout the year 1820. je certa erning the ls details arly . enough is nt data and import: 's of the fishery busi- known of th years 1825—perhap: method of capture earlier—and 187 was largely with “ —little hooks, with heavily } It is known, too, that for years the fishery was exclusively by New From round and about C craft of v ture of the f down 1 england and fishing village pe Cod from 600 too s sizes engaged in the e day + within a few years, th went further south than Abs beats rare~ com light. In that year the te mount of mackerel Ited in the New England states was ” barrels. Since then the decline has been more or less steady, and of late years most marked. Last year the combined landings of salt mackerel of the New Eng- land fleet aggregated only 13,154 barrels. These figures speak with marked emphasis of the fishery’s decay. 4 —-+e-__ How He Drove a Bargain. From the Boston Post. A country schoolmaster, being pleased on one occasion with the conduct of his senior scholars, resolved to give them a “great treat.” Therefere, having found that they were very fond of good poultry, our schoolmaster went to a first-class poul- terer's, where he saw twenty-four geese very creditably together. there, sir," said the shop- “Ah, yes; but unfortunately, too fine for may purpos replied the schoolmaster. “Too tine How so, sir?” inquired the shopkeeper. “Why, you sce, I am rather peculfarly situated. 1 am a schoolmaster; therefore I make a tule of occasionally giving my boys @ ‘Jolly feed," as they term it. Well, s thinking of a method by which i punish them for their past conduct Without violating the rule that has stood for years. Now, what do you think I in- tend doing? I think I hav got @ few that would suit your purpose,” and the shopkeeper strutted up and down, taking first one, then another, until he had picked out twelve of the most miserable looking geese one could imagine. “There, sir,” he said, “if they don't answer your purpose I advise you to stew nothing but bones next time.” dh, very good,” said the ‘schoolmaste “Now, how about the price; of course, by my taking this tough lot you make a great difference 2h, none whatever,” said the shopkeeper emphatically, “they are all one price, sir— all one price.” “Oh, very good; then, as there will be no difference in the price I will have the ether twelve,”" said the schoolmaster, with a knowing look at another customer, who had just entered, much to the annoyance und disappointment of the astonished shop- keeper. — Belief in Unlucky Hours. From the w York Herald. Common as is the superstition that Fri- @ay is the most unlucky of days, and thir- teen of numbers. the belief in unlucky hours {s equally widespread on the Europe- an continent and in the e: - Gambetta was so firmly convinced that certain hours of the day are lucky and others unlucky that ke would never commence any import- ant undertaking or start on an important Jeurney without consulting a famous reader ef cards as to the auspicious hour, and President Faure, who was prudent cnough to select a lucky hour for starting on his ! recent journey to Russia, is said to share Gamb superstition. President Carnot was less credulous, and selected an un- lucky hour for starting on the journey to Lyon where he was assassinated by Caserto. The superstition is so common In Paris that cards tastefully embellished and containing a list of “hours to be avoidec” are extensively sold. AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c. Today. ©. G.
