14 ee AFFAIRS IN ALEXANDRIA Vhange in Method of Street Lighting Under Consideration. Proposed Sale of the City Light Plant —Executive Committee Meeting —Genern nd Personal, Evening Star Bureau, ) King street. Bell Telephone 106. ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 4, 1898. Yt fs more than probable that before the city council adjourns for its summer re- cess some very material change will be made in the matter of lighting the city streets. The plant now used is owned by city and is run at great expense. This plant is of such a small capacity that no ne hts can be added and no power can be furnished for incandescent lights. Many of the merchants are very anxious to have incandescent lights In their places of busi- ness, but they cannot be gratified, as the city council has refused point blank up to this time to allow any outside corpora- tion te rent out power for incandescent light purp On mor an one occasion electric light companies in Washington have made prop- Ositions to the a to furnish the necessary for lighting the streets and for ndescent lights as the people a may order. It is now highly probable t one of these propo- sitions will be accepted. It has been sug- gested tha sell cut the entire light plant, inclu he gas works, with a poly of Alexandria light service, for f $150,000. It is proposed to use #0 of this ameunt for the improve- the streets, and the balance. 060, will be applied to the sinking fund, Which is used to pay off the bonded in- deb ss of the city The 1 is gener approved by the People of Alexandria, for, with its con- Summation, the city would receive benefits which 7 very much needed—the first, good and the second, incandescent electric lights.
