The town of Dover, N. J., and the country within a radius of twenty miles were star- Ued yesterday afternoon by a series of ter- rific explosions, the first of which occurred at 2:10 o'clock. The explosions occurred in the Atlantic Powder Company's works. The plant is a complete mass of ruins. Six workmen were killed and four others seri- ously injured, some probably fatally. A hasty investigation into the cause of the disaster makes it almost certain that a Was the work of spies in the employ of the Spanish government. This is the second powder plant destroyed within three days. ‘The California Powder Mills, five miles from Santa Cruz, Cal., which had been working night and day to supply the government demand, were up on the night of April 26. Eleven men were killled by the explosion. The six men killed in yesterday's disaster were: Elias Abers, home in Kenvil. He leaves a wife and one child. William May- cocks, home in Kenvil. He leaves a wife and seven children. Alfred Rarick, home in Kenvil. Leaves a wife and four children. Carey Roy, home in Kenvil. Leaves a wife and five children. David Scheer, home in Succasunna. Leaves a wife and five chil- dren. William Stumpf, home in Kenyil. Leaves a wife and two children. Four men were seriously injured. They are: Ike Els- worth, cut about the body and burned. Charles Pratt, arms cut and body burned. Thomas Smith, badly cut by flying splin- ters. John Thorpe, burned and cut by fly- ing debris. Will not recover. The works are situated in an isolated Spot, seven miles from Dover. There were ten buildings in the group, and all have been wrecked. The first explosion occurred in one of the packing houses. The concus- sion set off the explosives in another pack- ing house nearby. Debris and burning tim- bers from the wrecked buildings we ried high into the air, and fell in a shower over the remaining buildings, setting fire to the main factory and the other five pecking houses and the two sheil houses, in a brief time the expl . Uiese buildings were set off, and left death and destruction in their wake. The works have been running night and day turning out rush orders for the United States government. and a large amount of ammunition, ready for shipment, was stored in the packing houses. This, with all other explosives, was completely de- troyed. People who felt the shocks and saw the flames of the burning structures flocked to the place from miles around, but could render no aid to the injured. They were territied and held back in fear of other explosions. A few men who were in the buildings menaged to escape, and they ran about bewildered. It was nearly 5 o'clock before the ruins had cooled off suffi- ciently to be approached, and before the onlookers could be induced to go near the spot. Officials of the company, assisted by the Dover police, immediately set about to make an investigation. It was learned that two strange men had been seen in the vi- cinity of the works both day before yester- day and yesterday. The police are search- ing for the supposed spies, but it is believ- ed they have gone to Philade!phia, and are thus safe from immediate arrest. —_—o- OPPOSITION GROWS STRONGER. nor Sagasta’s Government May Be Hampered by the Cortes. The Madrid correspondent of the London Standard says: “TLe parliamentary outlook is less sat- isfactory, despite the praiseworthy efforts both the government and Senor Silvela are making to induce the opposition to reduce the wonted dilatory debates, with a view to getting voted rapidly those bil!s and au- thorizations which are indispensable to en- able the government to carry on affairs in the present critical circumstances. “Unfortunately Senor Robledo and some Carlists and republicans seem deter- mined to provoke retrospective and irritat- ing debates, simply to further personal and party aims. Perfectly heediess of the erave cousequences of such unpatriotic attempts to weaken the government in the presence of war with America, they con- tent themselves with insisting upon pro- tracted debates on the addres In the lower house the extreme opposition groups and some generals also insist upon a fresh discussion of Cul an affairs.” The Madrid correspondent of the Daily Mail sa: ‘Senor Cadorniga will ask in tae cortes tomorrow for the expulsion of cer- tain foreign correspondents. His request refers to the representatives of American newspapers.” —— —- see. GERMAN EMPEROR SATISFIED. f the United States in Cuba Meets His Approval. The Berlin correspondent of the London Standard says: “I hear from a good source that Emperor William, who is deeply interested in the Cuban question, has repeatedly taken oc- casion to explain his views to Germany's neutrality, His majesty is all the more en- tatled to pursue his present policy, as he possesses absolute proof that the United States do not intend ever to annex Cuba. They are prepared to suffer defeat from the Spaniards at first, but they will not end the war until Spain renounces her sover- eignty over Cuba, which can then, and not till then, gradually be restored to order.” THE WAR MAP.
