Three Simple Questions. From Youth's Companion. , A young woman who has a position as librarian at one of the lare istant public braries in Pennsylvania says that she hes a keen sympathy for the ticket agents at railway stations—a sympathy born of kindred woes. One day two well-dressed young women approached the desk. One of them took @ memorandum from her pocketbook. “Can you tell me how many yards—oh, that’s the wrong list!” she said, hastily bringing forth another slip of paper. “Here it is, Will you please tell =e who is Rud- <ipling’s favorite author? vet mayan tes to tell you, never having heard that he had one,” I admitted. “Dear me,” said the young woman, irri- tably. It’s one of the questions for our next club meeting. Well, which one of ‘Thackeray's books brought him in the largest income?” ‘That you will probably find out by con- sulting a book the number of which I will give you,” I said, turning to one of my reference drawers as I spoke. “Oh, I can't stop to look it up,” she said, hurriedly. “I thought you could tell me at once. Well, there's one more thing: Bessie Cumnock (my cousin in St. Louis) had a splendid book when I was there last year, for anecdotes of famous people. I can’t re- member the name of it, or who wrote it, but it was about so big,” (illustrating with one finger on the desk), “and it had a dark green cover. Now, can you tell me what it is? Some day when I have time I'd like to get it out. Of course you must have it in the library.” For the third time I was obliged to con- fess my inability to give her direct infor- mation. She looked at me with a piercing gaze, and turned away, saying audibly to her companion: “There! That just shows what all this talk about their being examined for posi- tions in public libraries amounts to! Three perfectly simple questions, all on literary subjects, and she couldn't answer one of shem.” Have heen tn use for over 50 years, Have proven thelr GREAT DURABILITY. superior QUALITY OF TONE, TOUCH AND WORKMANSHIP. A four-inch circulsr saw for the amputa- tion of limbs Is beirg installed at the Emer- gency Hospital at Boston. An electric mo- tor will furnish the power to run the de- vice. The saw will be mounted on a fiex- ible shaft like that which a dentist uses, only larger. The bearings, in which runs the saw arbor, are attached to a handle by which the surgeon is able to direct the saw at any angle. Dr. Galvin and his assist- ants will be able to save considerable time by the use of this appliance. Not only does the saw cut much faster than a hand tool, but the heat of its rapid cutting sears the fiesh and blood vessels, and the healing precesses of 1ature are advanced to a stage which by the old method is reached only after an hour or two. ———- see A Formidable Word.
