In every town, on every street crossing and on the depot platforms men waved their arms in frantic token of ap- proval and in most instances seconded their gestures by yells. In the larger towns where the train stopped for a few moments the crowd piled so closely in upon the cars that it vas impossible for the sol- diers to leave the train at all. Like It Was in ’61. “I was among those who answered the first call in 1861,” said the commanding of- ficer, Col. Andrew 8. Burt, today, ‘and these scenes along the way are very sim- ilar to those that greeted us as we went to the front thirty-seven years ago.” At one small station where the train stopped for water the colonel was standing upon the steps of the car watching the crowd, and as the soldiers aid people yélled their mutual approval the colonel said to the men n the platform: “Are you going to follow us, boys, if war comes?” “We are coming right after you,”’ shouted several, aud Col. Burt climbed back. into the train, with the remark: “I guess those fellows are all right.” e Men Are Full of Fight. The men of the 25th are full of fight, and it was shown in good style last night as the train left Terre Haute. A young fellow on the platform shouted in joke: “Hurrah for Spain!” and instantly there was a break by several soldiers to reach him. They were held back by, the non-commissioned officers, who explained that it was meant as a joke. “That don't matter,” was the reply. “They don’t nobody tell us hurrah for Spain.” The regiment stopped about thirty min- utes today at Nashville, and then started for Chattanooga, where it is expected to arrive at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Eight companies will be camped tonight in Chick- amauga Park and two companies with or- ders from the War Department will con- tinue on their way to Key West. pee Sea THE ART LEAGUE FUND. Enjoyable Benefit Entertainment Given at Columbia Theater. The performance at the Columbia Thea- ter yesterday afternoon for the benefit of the Art Students’ League was one of the most enjoyable affairs of the kind ever given in this city. The program supplied a never-failing list of good numbers, and the house was well filled with society peo- ple, who appreciated the various exercises provided for their éntertainment, and testi- fied that cppreciation in long and hearty applause cn every proper occasion. The program was divided into four parts, end the only thing connected with the affair that was not entirely satisfactory was the series of long waits between the parts. All of the features deserved high praise. The living cartoons, under the direction of Mr. Felix Mahoney, the car- toonist of The Evening Star, and embrac- ing the portrayal of a number of his draw- ings, which have been published, the tab- leaux representing a series of pictures from Life; a “problem play in one guess,” entitled ‘The Nerve of the Needy,” were exceedingly effective. In the play the cast consisted of Kenneth O'Connor, Ed. Walsh, Mills Thompson, Felix “Mahoney, William Fuller Curtis, W. 8. McCarthy, Will Ma- honey and George O'Connor. ‘An athletic performance by Prince Troubetskoy, a dramatization of scenes from “Quo Vadis,” and an illustrated song, ‘Listen to My Tale of Woe,” arranged by the composer and put on by Mr. Hub Smith and Mr. Mills ‘Thompson, were novelties. Mrs. Tom C. Noyes sang Neidlinger’s “Serenade” and Shelley’s “Love's Sorrows” in splendid voice and with fine effect. Mr. Gaetano Trentanove sang Tosti’s “The Serenade,” also with splendid effect; Geo. O’Copnor, the well-known singer of comic and negro songs; the Little Gem Quartet and Mr. Charles Green, in a laughable monologue. Another number which de- served special mention was the work of Mr. Mills Thompson, in imitating well- known characters on the stage, such as De Wolf Hopper, Dan Daly and others. His contributions to the program were specially enjoyable. Among those who took part in the “pio- tures from Life’ were Mrs. MacLennan, Mrs. Mearns, Mrs. R. C. Child, the Misses Purker, Hough, Eds Noyes, J. Thomp- son, M. Downing, E. Robinsen, Marie Wimer, Marina MacLennan, Hoeke, Oliver, Ce Cox, Alice Foster, Wendling, Main- wright, Sherman and Kauffmann; Messrs. R. C. Child, F. R. Stark, N.C. Adams, J. J. Edson, jr., Trentanove, Victor Kauff- mann, Frank Vaughn, Charles J. Govern, William H. Dennis, J. A. Thompson, A. Clemons, George Gibbs, Felix Mahoney, George O'Connor, Mills Thompson, Wm. Fuller Curtis, Hubbard T. Smith, Carl Willer and Prince Troubetzkoy. The whole affair was under the direction of Mr. Parker Mern, who arranged the berefit and acted as general manager. To his efforts is due the unbcunded success of the entertainment. Mr. Mann was assisted by Mr. Felix Mahoney as stage manager. = When a young woman sits down and ponders over her future life, there is one all-important Subject which she should not forget. Enlarged Service of the Capital Traction Company Will Be Be- gun Saturday—New Power House. - . It is expected that, beginning Saturday, the cars on the Capital Traction railrgad will be run by electricity from the new power house of the company. It is possible of course that something may‘arise to pre- vent this plan from being carried out, but it is not anticipated by the officials that such delay, if there should be any, will ex- tend further than Sunday morning. The interest of the p&blic in the completion of the new power house and the placing at its disposal of a larger supply of electricity than can be leased lies inthe fact that the cars will then be run all the way to the navy yard instead of, as now, stopping at the Baltimore and Ohig station. ‘The horses-are to be taken off this section of the line, and then, for the first time since the 29th of last September, when the cable power house was destroyed by tire, the en- tire road will again be equipped with a rapid transit system. In addition to this change, which no Goubt will be a welcome one to the resi- dents in the eastern section of the city, the increased supply of electricity will make it possible to attach trailers to ail the cars on the Mth street and the George- town Hines. The present service of single cars has b€en found to be inadequate to meet the demands, and merely from a rev- enue standpoint it is estimated the com- pany will be greatly benefited by this op- portunity to provide better facilities. The cars on the 7th street line will con- tinue to be operated by cable until a third engine is installed in the new. power house. The change frofii the cable the underground system is pragjically. iplet- ed, ag there are only sema three or four hundred feet to be equippdd! with the con- ductor bars. a a Be 5 : Much satisfacticn is expressed over the enforcement of the Cofimissfoners’ regu- lation which forbids ty in the cars.
