14 ALEXANDRIA AFFAIRS Acceptance by Dr, Micou of Chair in Theological Seminary. IMPROVED ELECTRIC ALARM SYSTEM Abolition of Office of City Engineer Under Consideration. GENERAL AND- PERSONAL Evening Star Bureau, 529 King Street. Bell Telephone 106. ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 16, 1898. Rev. Dr. Micou of the Philadelphia Di- vinity School, who was recently elected to the chair of theology at the Virginia Theo- logical Seminary by the trustees of that institution, has accepted the position, and will assume its duties at the opening of the next session, in September. It is said he will move with his family to the seminary in July and oceupy the residence of Dr. Walker, who is at present professor of theology, but who will retire at the close of the present session, his resignation hav- ing been accepted by the trustees. Rev. Dr. Micou was born in Louisiana, but belongs to the Micou family of Vir- ginia. For several years he had charge of church at Waterbury, Conn., but re- signed the charge to accept the chair 6f theology in the Philadelphia Divinity School. He is a man of great learning, having pursued his theological studies at the universities of Edinburgh and Erlanger. There is still another chair to be fillea— that of ecclesiastical history and canon law—which was made vacant by the resig- nation of Rev. Carl E. Grammar, S. T. D. He retired recently to accept a call to Christ Church, Norfolk, Va., where he is now located. "Rev. Thomas Packard is temporarily in charge of the classes for- merly taught by Dr. Grammar. Charter Granted. Judge Norton, in the corporation court, has granted a charter to the Bottlers’ Pro- tective Association of Washington, the ob- jects of which are to protect its members against the use by unauthcrized persons of their bottles, boxes, etc. The capital stuck ”), and S. C. Palmer of Washington is named as president. 8. G. Breat is the local representative. Ordnance Supplies. Capt. Bryan of the Alexandria Light In- fantry has received notice from the ord- nance department at Chicago that a quan- tity of supplies for his command were for- warded from that city the 11th instant. The Fire Alarm System. The matter of purchasing for the city an improved electric fire alarm system will probably come up at the meeting of the city council next Tuesday night. It is more than probable that the present sys- tem of running harum-scarum all over town in the search for a fire after the alarm is sounded will continue, although it 1s conceded that should the improved sys- tem be put in operation it would more than pay for itself. This would result from avoidance of wear and tear in the horses and"ajptratus. ¥nnnery to Be Moved. It is said that the tannery of the C. C. Smoo:'s Sons Company, which has been in gperation here for a aumber of years, will shortly shut down, and all of the opera- tion’ transferred to Wilksboro’, N. C.,where the: company has a large plant. It is said the condition of Wilkes street, on which the tannery is lecated, is in such a bad ,Oondition: that the owners cannot stand it. ‘The intimation is given that if the city wiil improve Wilkes street with modern paving the Messrs. Smoot: may be induced to chang their mind. Musicale Last Night. The members of the Sunday school and Epworth League gave a musicale at the church last night, at which there was a large attendance. Among those who par- ticipated In the exercises were Mrs. O. F. Baggott, Miss Katie Meyers, Mr. William Bryant, Mr. Louis Bohraus, the Misses Pollard and Williams, Mrs. Tyler-Leef of this city and Mr. Charles Moore and Miss Darling of Washington. The City Engineer. Sevetal’ years ago, under the charter as emended, the office of city engineer was created and a competent man elected to fill the position. The office has been of great “benen= to the city, and under the engineer's ‘supervision many streets have been im- proved at a nominal cost. He has been -Svict, in_ requiring property owners to live up to the law. It is rumored now that an -effort will be made to have the city council abolish the office. It is hoped by the citi- zens, however, that no such action will be taken, In Police Circles. The police have had but little to do for the past forty-eight hours. There were no ar- rests yesterday or last night and no cases for trial by Mayor Simpson in the police court this morning. ‘There were twenty-one lodgers at police headquarters last night. Brevities. The annual meeting of the Morrison Brick Company of Washington was held in this city yesterday. The old officers were re-elected. P. M. Bradshaw has been chosen by Mar- ley Encampment, I. O. O. F., as a delegate to the convention of the order at Roanoke June 14. Mr. Frank E. Anderson has qualified as executor of the estate of the late Esther E. Scott. Mr. J. L. Flanigen, jr., has been appoint- ed a notary public for this city by Gov. Tyler. J. F. Rogers has been awarded the con- tract for rebuilding the Old Dominion Boat Club house. Alexandria Division, Ancient Order of Hi- bernians, will hold a special meeting to- night to transact business of importance in connection with the St. Patrick’s day ban- quet. ed Against Renaming Our City Streets. To the Editor of The Evening Star: You have mary readers who can scarcely believe their senses when informed of the measure to rename the lettered streets of our city, which is now before Congress (Senate bill 4000) and with the approval of the District Commissioners. The alphabet has been exhausted in the city, and the outlying suburban streets must have names, and hence it is proposed and recommended that we abandon the present admirable system and adopt both within and beyond the city lMmits such arbitrary names as “Adams” street for A, Buchanan” street for B, “Calhoun” street for C and so on. There is no need to do this whatever. It is not only unnecessary, but very objectiorable. Why not preserve lettered designations in the city, just as they are, and for new subueban streets dcsignate them as Sub. A street, Sub. B street, &c., or Double A street, Double B street, &c., or A2 street, B2 street, or in other words simply repeat the alphabet with such prefix or suffix as will designate the new region. A suggestion, made by one of your correspondents, is to use for the new suburbcn streets the Greek let- ters—Alpha street. Beta street, &ce. The only difficulty with this is that it is not capable of indefinite extension, and, too, it would give no knowledge of location ex- cept to the very few Greek scholars. At all events, do not let us abandon the let- tered nomenclature of the streets, for it would not only be a step backward, but the law, if passed, will be a “dead-letter” law. I mean no pun, but firmly believe that the measure is indefensible, imprac- ticable, and can never be foisted upon the people by any legislation, except to the extent of changing the books of the Dis- trict government. The people will still continue to use the letter designation, has, the same, and endless fares tt sought to as it can, end druggists to use the i writing prescriptions, and, although this has everything to recommend it, yet so strong is habit that the old system is al- most universally used still. The homely old illustration, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink,” finds an application here. To abandon the letters for street designation means to compel the praperty owners to change all their dwelling horse snd store leases, their wills, their insurance papers and the wives and daughters their visiting cards. Enor- mous labor and expense will be incurred for chauging the books of the water office, surveyors’ office and other branches of the District government. For years the city post office and letter carriers would de greatly embarrassed. The city directory would be a Chinese puzzle. Every 'mer- chant will have to change the addresses of all his customers, and their porters and drivers will be in espair in their efforts to find the newly designated streets. The real €state and insurance men will have to en- tirely reorganize thelr books. Illiterate People, whe do not know how to spell, easily distinguish a letter, but could not decipher a long name. Our whole popula- tion would have thrust upon them a new and strange city. Furthermore, there is nothing in the name of a great man to designate local:ty or graduated position in the geography of the city, but there is in the sequence of the letters. Of three such names as “Barcroft, “Benton” and “Bu- chanan” one would be south of the Capi- tol, one north of the Capitol and the other out in the suburbs, but who could tell “which was which,” or locate an: address. The single letter has some objections, it is true, for A sounds like K and B like P, but “better endure the {lls we have than fly to others we know not of.” With the letters the admirable “quarter sectioning” of the city irto northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast is practicable and can be maintained in suburban extension, and it is not practicable with arbitrary rames. The primary object of an address is to indicate locality and not to glorify a great name, and that Gesignation in street nomenclature which will best indicate lo- cation is the one which is best. This the letters do with the greatest simplicity, the greatest economy and the greatest sugges- tiveness, both for the ignorant as well as the learned. It seems to me that every citizen and property owner who is inter- ested in the welfare of our city and who desires to uphold and maintain the splen- id original plan of our fathers should Protest against this change from a stand- Point ef business sense, if not from senti- ment. EDWARD W. BYRN. March 12, 1898, ————— Our Native Birds. Mrs. Olive Thorne Miller, the well-known ornithologist, is soon to visit Washington, and, under the auspices of the Audubon Society, will, March 26, at the Washington Club, commence a course of her lectures or talks on the subject of our native birds, a subject to which no true lover of nature can be indifferent. Mrs. Miller has pre- pared herself for the work by many years of enthusiastic and painstaking study. There have been practically no Mmits to her capacity for patient, untiring observa- tion, nor have the caprices of wind and Weather possessed any terrors for her. North, south, east and. west, in city parks and forest depths, by rivers and lakes and mountain strtams, this dauntless investi- gator has followed the dainty objects of her friendly pursuit into their most secret hiding places. Dressed in leaf-colored gar- ments, screened by bushes, rocks, fences, anything that served to hide her suffi- ciently from the glancing eyes of the shy creatures, holding her very breath and heart-beats in check, in order to bring them as near as“possible, Mrs. Miller has noted every peculiarity of aspect, voice and habit and accurately recorded the same. In later years Mrs. Miller has appeared as a lecturer, with the most gratifying success. Her ¢arnest and lucid talks on birds, illustrated by beautifully-mounted specimens, never fail to arouse and deepen the interest and sympathy of her listeners for the feathered denizens of our fields and forests, who. in many sections of the coun- try, are Tast'dtsappeuring ‘Wefore the ruth- less hand of civilized, man.
