The above saving can be effected by simply cutting off the supply to the fixtures when the latter are not needed for us Mr. McFarland then recommends that the janitors of the schools be instructed to cut off the supply of water io the school house at the point where the service pipe enters the building, during all such times as the water is not needed for school purposes or for cleaning; and that if for any reason this be impracticable, the supply of water be cut off from all automatic or constant flow closets and urinals when such are not needed. “It is the intenticn of the department,” he says, “to meter all schools not yet me- tered and to keep a constant check on the qventity of water vsed by each.” >— 2D TO DUTY. ASS Officers Selected for-the Miantonomoh and; Katahdin. A commander fer the monitor Miantono- m.ch, which was ordered into commission Tuesday, was selected yesterday in the person of Captain"Mortimer Johnson. The Miantonomoh, with the ram Katahdin, will remain in the Delfware for the present at least. The following officers were today ordered to duty on the Miantonomoh: Lieut. N. A. Gill, on duty af Philadelphia; Ensign N. T. Coleman, Ensign A. L. Norton, at the Naval Academy; Chief Engineer W. M. Parks, at Columbian iron Works, Balti- more; Passed Assistant Engineer C. H. Matthews, at the New York navy yard. Commander G. F. F. Wilde has been de- tached from duty as secretary of the light house board and ordered to the command of the ram Katahdin, Other officers as- signed to duty on that vessel are Lieut. A. E. Culver, now in the bureau of ordnance; Lieut. W. F. Low, now on the Enterprise; Lieut. D. Daniels, now at the Naval Acad- emy, and Ensign J. R. Campbell, now at the torpedo station, Newport. With the commissioning of these two vessels on the 10th there remain only two vessels on the 10th there remain only the cruisers Columbia and Minneapolis on the Atlantic coast available for immediate service in case the department should de- cide to commission more ships. The Atlan- ta, at New York, could be made ready in the course of three or four months, and the Chicago in six months, in case emergency orders for their repair were issued. There are a number of good ships on the Pacific coast, however, whose repair is under way, such ‘as the Charieston, the Philadelphia, the Yorktown and others. It is said in the navigation bureau that there is a pressing need of able machin- ists for the navy, caused by the hereto- fore unnoted fact that every one of the machinists on the Maine lost his life in the explosion. Moreover, all the firemen but one were killed. The bureau has in- vited enlistments from men who have had naval service before in the engine rooms. The Navy Department has received a telegram from Captain Sigsbee announcing the arrival at Havana yesterday morning of the wrecking tug Merritt, with the wrecking lighter F. R. Sharp, under charge of Captain Fred R. Sharp of the Merritt ‘There is no unusual stir of activity about the bureaus of the quartermaster general or the commissary general of the army, where more than anywhere else the prepa- | rations for a warlike emergency would be apparent. The officers of these bureaus Say no accumulation of additional supplies is taking place and that no contracts for extra supplies are in contemplation. ee Ss American Florists to Meet Here. The Society of American Florisis and Or- ramental Horticulturists will hold their ex- ecutive meeting in this city instead of Oma- ha, Neb.
