In reply to a Senate resolution Secretary Wilson of the Department of Agriculture yesterday sent to the Senate a statement concerning the production of sugar in this country, and his opinion of the effect of the importation of Hawailen sugar upon the production of beet sugar in the United States. He gave the average importation of sugar to this country for the past seven years as $101, 293, of which the Hawaiian product was %, He concludes that Hawaii will not jcusly compete with sugar producers in the United States, and says that “when the people of those islands come to consider the possibilities of coffee production it will be found that they have a monopoly with which no state in the union can interfere.” MALT-NUTRINE The Leading Malt Extranet. Special Correspondence of The Evening Star, LAUREL, Md., January 17, 1898. John Bell, a colored man of Xenia, Ohio, was badly injured bere tonight while at- tempting to jump from a train. Bell was stealing a ride, and in his haste to leave the train got off on the side opposite the plat- form, and fell into a fence which separates the two tracks. His weight, fortunately, forced a couple of pickets or he would have been crushed under the wheels of the mov- ing train. The man was carried into the gentlemen's waiting room, and Dr. J. R. Huntt re- sponded to a summons. It was found that Bell's right leg was broken, his back in- jured and his face cut in several places, He was looked after by Night Officer Robinson, who will probably serd him to W: or eying a washitetap Mr. Graham Dukehart. grand lecturer Masons of Maryland, paid the local loase an official visit tonight. - The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wil- Mam Owens, who recently ran a pair of scissors into her eye, is reported much bet- ter. ——.__. “Want” ads. in The Star pay because they bring answers, ascertaining their present legal residences as well as their- legal residences at the time of appointment, and charging to each state the legal residents of that state, so that the distribution of appointments here- after may be based upon the results of that inquiry.” Lunch Time Unauthorized. When asked regarding the hours of la- bor in the government departments Mr. Harlow said the Jaw required not less than seven hours daily, but it had been a prac- lice in the departments to allow a half hour for lunch out Of this time. He did not think this practice was authorized by the law and he did not think a half hour for lunch could be considered a part of the hours of labor provided in the law. When asked how many employes of the government actually work seven hours a day, not including the half hour for lunch, Mr. Harlow submitted a statement show- ing that 10,080 employes are required to work only six and a half hours a day. A Saving ef $800,000.
