Persons Pretending to Be Govern- ment Officials Fleecing Them. Replies are being received by the pension office from some of the agents of the Ex- Slave Pension Associations in the south. To all of these letters the department is replying in no uncertain terms. The fol- lowing letter, which is given in part, il- lustrates the position of the pension office upon the subject: “Inasmuch as this bureau has received numerous complaints to the effect that certain parties have been traveling through the southern states and representing that the bill in question had uctually become a law, that an appropriation of 000,000 had been made for the purpese of paying the pensions-granted thereby, and that they, the said agents, were officers of the gov- ernment, authorized and empowered to en-. roll ex-slaves for pensionable purposes, it is deemed proper to suggest to you that you advise your agents to carefully refrain from making any representations whatever to the effect that they are officers of the government, end that thie bureau will make every effort in its power to prosecute any man who, under the cover of repre- sentations that he is an officer of the gov ernment, shall collect any money or other things of value by pretending that he is authorized and empowered to place the names of ex-slaves on the pension rolls.” ‘The latest advices received by the pen- sion office in this matter of pensioning the ex-slaves. came in the form of a printed bill, calling for a meeting at the court house at Murfreesboro’, Tenn. It sets forth that for 224 years the negroes have en- dured untold miseries, and did more for the lopment of the great resources of the country than any other people in it. That all political parties claim that the govern- ment owes the ex-slaves a pension, but whatevec may be the facts in this regard, it was their purpose henceforward to v fer measures and not for men. It say: “The pensioning of the ex-slaves will re- deem our men and women, and let the watchword be pension for ex-slaves. A bill has been introduced in the House by Representatives Belknap of Chicago, proposing retaliatory steps against France if the plans of the French govern- ment for an increase of duties on American meat products are carried out. Mr. Belk- nap’s bill is understood to be expressive of the views of Chicago and the west general- ly, as a result of the recent action of the French chamber of deputies. It authorizes an increase of duty on articles brought from France in amount eguivalent to the additional duties imposed on American pro- ducts. The other case has a bearing upon the question of injury received in line of duty. The claim is that of the minor children of Adolph Harter, late Company E, 143d In- diana Volunteer Infantry. Claim fs reject- ed on the ground that all the testimony gathered by the special examiner agrees on the one point fatal to the claim, that is, that the solder was absent and separated from his fellows, on his own pleasure until after midnight at some ater or hall, and in trying to reach his room fell down the stairway, which caused his death. eee AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c.
