From the Philadelphia R Pedestrians in Broad street afternoon were treated to a was quite typical of the progr age. A fin de le beggar plying his trade upon a bic: is certainly elty, The man was a cripple, his left leg being missing almost from the hip joint. From the nature of his affliction it would seem almost impossible for him to keep his bale ance upon his wheel, and yet he not only managed to hold his t gracefully, but with his one good leg he pushed the pedal in great fashion. He in fact, a scorch- er. It was his habit to cruise around Broad t until a Wheelman who looked “touch- came along. He would overhaul e usual plea for He picked out such a one at Wharton street and started after him. The intended victim looked @round and noted the cripple’s appearance with a smile of mingled astonishment and amusement. On the pursuer’s breast hung his trade a large placard reading, “Help th cripple.” The other man put on extr and started to scorch away. The also “smoked up,” and in a mom race was orf. The latter was laughing so heartily that he exhausted all his wind. “Can't you help me along a It+ tle?” asked the cripple. “He said the other; “you've cripple thanked him, jocketed the coin and went off to look for more victims, —s Converting Wood Into Liquid, From the Boston Transcript. It is not generally known that over 60 per cent of wood may be conyerted into liquid. The strongest hydraulic pressuro would not squeeze one-half of 1 per cent of moisture from dry wood, but by putting the same material into an iren retort and converting it into charcoal by means of heat, the gases and smoke, to the extent ef fully 6 per cent of the weight of the wood, may be condensed into liquid called pyroligneous and from it are ob- tained wood « , acetate of lime and wood tars. A cord of wood weighing 4,000 pounds produced about 2,650 pounds of py- roligneous acid and 700 pounds of char- coal. The pyroligneous acid from one cord ef wood produces nine gallons of S2 per cent crude wood alcohol, 200 pounds of ace- tate of lime and about twenty-five gullons of tar, besides thirty-five bushels of char- After the pyroligneous acid is neu- tralized with lime the wood alc i Uilled off, the lime holding the acet in solution. After the separation the wood spirit the remaining liquid is bolled of down in open pans to a sugir, which {8 dried and becomes the acetate of lime of commerce. Ace of lime is used for making acetic acid. Fuliy three-fifths of all the wood alcohol and acetate of lime produced in the world are male in the United States. Fully 15,000 acres per year are cleared for this purpose. Wood hol affords a perfect substitute f alcohol for manufacturing and mec’ purposes, and at less than one-third the . cost. It is used principally as a solvent m the making of shellac varnish, in making celluloid, photographic paper, etc. It makes many beautiful dye Unts. It is an- tiseptic and much used for liniments and for skin rubbing in bath hous: A Chapter of Delays. From the Cleveland Plain Dealer, One evening not long ago a slight blaze was discovered in the neighborhood of the corner of Prospect and Erie streets, and a rush was made for the fire alarm box. As sometimes happens, the whereabouts of the key was not known, and for a minute or two there was a lot of wild anxiety run- ning to waste. All sorts of suggestions were offered, but nobody took advantagé of them. Fortunately, a short policeman came trotting up and presently produced his key. It was attached to a chain and the box was pretty high up, and the key didn’t come within six inches of the key- hole. The short policeman puffed and tu ‘ ea, by George!” he said. “Lift him up!" roared somebody. “Hold on, boy said the officer, “I'll loosen the chain. He unbuttoned his coat and vegt and the waistband of his official trousers “and final- ly released the jangling attachment. A moment later the door of the box flew open. “Let me see,” said the policeman, “you turn something, don't you?” The fact is he didn’t know anything about it. “Say,” said a funny man in the crowd, “will somebody kindly step around and ask that fire to be as deliberate as possible?” This made everybody laugh. guess the cop takes this for Lunnon, don’t you know,” said the funny man again. “Pull down the knob,” yelled a small boy, and the short policeman obeyed. Luckily it was only a trifling blaze. THE SATURDAY STAR BY MAIL $1.00 PER YEAR.
