THE Deliberations of American Academy Brought to a Close. The American Negro Academy closed its first annua] convention at Lincoln Me- morial Church, llth and R streets north- west, last night. An address was to have been delivered in the evening by Mr. J. W. Hoffman of the state university of North Carolina, on “The Outlook of Scientific Work Among the Negroes.” Mr. Hoffman was unfortunately ill, however, and the paper by Mr. G. M. Grisham of Kansas City, Mo., on “Aims in Negro Education,” was the only one read. The speaker declared that the negro has many glering faults to be corrected; that he has duties to perform as well as rights to protect; that diplomacy is his best weapon, not merely brute strength; that he must learn the Anglo-Saxon hagbit of biding his time, and that he requires more than anything else persistent seif- respect. Paul Laurence Dunbar recited some of his favorite poems, which evoked great ap- plause. x The afternoon meeting was devoted to the business of the society. A number of by-laws were adopted, and the following eminent pegroes “were elected to corre- spondent ‘membership: Sir Samuel Lewis of Sierre Leon, West Africa; E. W. Bly- den of West Africa, Mr. Henry O. Tanner, the American artist, and Bishop J. T. Holly of Haiti. The congratulations of the acad- emy were then extended to the Central British African Association of London, and resolutions were passed acknowledging the courtesy of the pastor and congregation of the church in which the meetings were held and of the committee whieh provided the luncheon served each di 1s a beautiful May be secured Hair Resewer.
