KANN, SONS & CO ALEXANDRIA AFFAIRS Sudden Death, From Ao- cident, of Iéago ML Kell THE BODY DISCORERED BY A SERVANT Deceased WaisPromrinenit in Busi- Sac ness Circles agd Popular. seers GENERAL AND PERSONAL Snes Evening Star Bureau, No, 529 King Street. Bell Telephone 103. ALEXANDRIA, Va.,-December 28, 1897. The many friends of Isaac M. Kell, better known as “Minnie” Well, were shocked last night to learn of hfs sudden death, which occurred front apparently accidental cause. When seen on the street yesterday after- noon about 5 o'clock. Mr. Kell was appar- ently in the best of health. Ellen Thomas, an old family servant, went to Mr. Kells residence shortly ‘after 9 o'clock, and as she opened the front’ door her foot struck something, and, upon.lighting the gas; she at once recognized it-as the body of Mr. Kell. She made a hasty examination “and found that life was extinct and !mmediate- jy thereafter sounded an alarm, which was answered by a number of the friends of the deceased. Mr. Kell’s body was lying at the foot of the steps in the front hall, and his head was under a settee, his feet being on the lower step. No one was in the house at the time he is supposed to have met his death, but it is generally bélieved that Mr. Keli in at- tempting to ascend the stairs missed his feoting in the dark and fell backward, striking his head with such force as to cause concussion of the brain. It was at first believed his neck had been broken, but an examination revealed that such was not the case. There was a small cut just back cf the left ear, and it is supposed that this was caused by striking his head against the settee. It is believed that Mr. Kell had been dead an hour or so wheg found. Corener Purvis Mas summoned immediately, but did not think it necessary to hold an inquest and gave a certificate of accidental death. News of the occurrence was at once sent to the aged mother of the deceased, who was visiting her daughter on Cameron street, and she was completely overcome by grief. - “Minnie” Kell was known by everybody as a thoroughly good fellow. He had many friends in this city and elsewhere. For some years he, with Mr. J. Matthew, was engaged in the produce vusiness on King Street. He was thirty-eight years old and unmarried. He was a brother of Mrs. J. E. Alexander and Mrs. E. H. O’Brien, County Court. The following business was transacted in the Alexandria county court yesterday, Judge J. M. Love presiding: Lavinia Gray set. John Offutt, centinued until January term, 1898, The motionof the Washington, Arlington and Faljg, Church Railway Com- pany for the appoiatment of a commission- er to ascertain to whom, the fund of $2,500, paid by the company for land adjoining Rosslyn, shall be paid, was argued by counsel. Mr. Brent, representing several of the creditors, 6pposed the motion, and the case was coftinuéd until Thursday next, at which time a decision is looked for. In the application'éf W. H. Torreyson and others for the opening of a new road in Arlington district, ‘the report of the viewers was filed.” "The motion of George N, Saegmueller and@‘others for the opening of a new road in Washington district was brought up, and Méssrs. W. N. Febrey, A. D. Torreyson, H.,|N.,Chapmen, Wesley Havenner and Gearge Boetler were ap- pointed commissioners to view the proposed site of the new roa) ‘Oh the application of George Hughes and ra for an éxtcnsion of the MusHpot road” commissioners ‘were appoiated to assess-damages to adjoining property owners. « Police Court. In the police court this morning Mayor Simpson dispesed of the following cases: Joseph. Harris, charged with an. assault upon Thomas Jackson and the dislocation of his jaw, was fined $5, in default of wh. charged with assaulting his wife, was dis- missed, Mrs. Wise failing to appear against him. The Tables Turned. It is very frequently the case that com- plaints are made at police headquarters of assaults committed upon the person mak- ing the complaint, when as a matter of fact the complainant is the aggressor. Such @ case was heard by Mayor Simpson in the police court this morning, when R. H. Davis, colored, charged that he had been assaulted by Robert Arnold. The evidence showed that Davis was the person at fault, and the mayor fined him $5, dismissing Arnold. Arthur Shirley Released. Arthur Shirley, the negro boy who on Christmas day shot and seriously injured a companion named Jonn Lewis, was this morning released from custody until want- ed by Mayor Simpson, it appearing that the shooting was accidental to a certain extent. Lewis fs still at the peint of death at the Alexandria Infirmary, und is not ex- pected to recover. His entire body on the left side is completely paralyzed, and he still has part of the bullet in nis aead. Fined #45 for Stabbing. Lewis Carrington, who stabbed Walker Wiggington Saturday night iast in a house kept by Tillie Po!ndexter, was this morn- ing fined $45, with the alternative of spend- ing sixty days in jail. Wiggington was be- fore the mayor and said that the wound was healing. 5 Trial of Bright Boys. Some time ago, it will be remembered, the agents of the Southern Railway Company reported to the police that a large quantity of brass had been stolen from cars stand- ing in the yard. About 500 pounds of the brass were recovered by Lieut. Smith and Officer Atkinscn in the house of Larry and Willie Bright, but the boys named could not be found. They were caught last night by the officers and locked up at police headquarters. This morning the case was continued until tomorrow at 9 o'clock in order that the necessary witnesses might be secured. St. John’s Day Sermon.
