The sentiment favorable to the annexa- tion of Cuba to the United States is grow ing among the resident Spaniards, who a convinced that autonomy is impracticable and the efforts of Spain to restore order are hopeless. These Spaniards expect thu to checkmate the Cuban independeuc party and secure for themselves substan- tial future guaranties of life and property. The editor of a leading Spanish daily has assured the correspondent that upward of 200 Spanish business men have taken steps to place their property and commer- cial interests in the names of their Ameri- can correspondents in order to avoid being further bled to pay the extraordinary Spanish war imposts. The advantages of annexation were openly discussed at re- cent meetings of the produce and other ex- changes. Seas SS CAPT. HART TAKEN TO PRISON. Convicted Filibuster’s Bondsman Sur- renders Him to the Authorities, A dispatch from Philadelphia yesterda: says: Capt. John D. Hart, formerly of Balti- more, principal owner of the Hart Steam- ship Company's vessels, against which there have been many charges of Silibuster- ing for the Cuban cause, was taken to the Eastern penitentiary this evening. He was convicted in the United States district court several months ago of aiding a Cuban filibustering expedition on the steamer Laurada, and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in the penitentiary. Periding decision on an appeal to the U. S. ccurt of apyeals from this sentence, Capt. Hart was allowed liberty under $7,000 bail. Tcday Jesse Eldridge, one of the captain's four bondsmen, notified the court that he desired to be relfeved of the security, and the captain's rearrest followed. Mr. Eldridge made no explanation of his action to the court, and Capt. Hart was given the alternative of furnishing other security or going to prison. He could not obtain new security, and in the custody of the United States marshal was taken to the penitentiary. Under instructions of the court he can ge: his release upon furnish- ing the required security.
