TAMMANY TIGERS PREP faa IS PLEASED RE 10 FEAST New Jersey Politicians Pleased Over Gov. Some of the leading bankers scem to think t! McKimey has not been quite’ positive enough in his declarations of a policy in favor of currency reform, but even in Wall street it is quite generally thougnt that the President is doing all that could be done under the.circumstances, and that measures more decided would fail of pas- sage in the Senate even’ if forced through the Hovse of Representatives. There seems to be a consensus of opinion among busi- ness men that the present Congress will fail to take radical steps upon any cf the important questions of the day—Haw alone excepted. Sugar refining interests and other importers directly intereste-1 pro fess to believe that the annexation of iHa- waii wil! become an accomplished fact be- fore March 4 next. Lakewood, N. J., still remains a veritable jungle for the Tammany tigers. Iichard Croker, the “boss’’ tiger, and Van Wyck. the young cut who is in training, and a host of hungry tigers, lean, thin, from the effects of three years’ fasting, smacking their jaws in the anticipation of the com- ing Greater New York feast, are very much in evidence “among the pincs. John C. Sheehan, the sick tiger, discredited and cast off, remains in New York city nursing the wounds received at the hands of the “boss.” It is not expected that the tigers will desert their quarters at Lake- wood before the installation of Judge Van Wyck as mayor of Greater New York on New Year day, though the opening of Con- gress has attracted some of the congres- sional felines from the Lakewood lair to Washington. Gossip About Mr. Sulzer. One of the most interesting bits of gossip that comes from Lakewood affects the eleventh congressional district. This is the district represented by Congressman Will- fai Sulzer. The Tammany Hall primaries be held the first week in January, 1898, John T. Oakley fourteenth as the present leader of the bly district, who is in Mr. Sulzer’s congressional district, is unpopular h many of the democratic leaders. A delegation headed by ex-Inspector Anthony Clinchy, one of the most popular among the Tammany Hall leaders of the city, re- cently visited Mr. Croker at Lakewood for the purpose of protesting against the con- tinuance of Mr. Oakley in the position of leader. The delegation asked that ex-Register John Reilly or Congressman Sulzer himself be allowed to take the leadership. Mr. Oakley, on the other hand, visited Lake- wood and attempted to induce Mr. Cro to indorse his “services” in the past by in- sisting upon his retention as leader. Final- ly Mr. Croker gave out the following state- ment: “I want it understood that no one has any authority to use my name to help him in a district contest. I am not inter- fering in any way in any contest for the control of assembly district organizations. The majority must rule. There should be no interference on the part of the main organization in local matters, and there will be none. The district will attend to their own affairs, and the best man will win. That is the only way.” This statement is regarded as significant, inasmuch as it shows that Mr. Croker in- tends to keep “hands off” in all of the local district fights in the coming demo- cratic primaries. It is said to settle the fate of Alderman Oakley, since he can hardly hope to win in a contest with the friends of ex-Register Reilly and Congress- man Sulzer united against him. There is no doubt about tht side that Croker at heart favors, however. At the time when John C. Sheehan was at the height of his power in the city John Reilly was the only man in Tammany Hall who dared to stand up and fight the “boss from Buffalo.” Now that Sheehan is a persona non grata the ex-register is not likely to be forgotten. As for Sulzer himself, it is well known that ker would go farther personally and do more for him than for any other member of Congress in New York city, in spite of te pronounced free silver and ultra labor views. er Interent in Gov. Griggn’ Appointment. On the other side of the fence interest in matters political now transpiring in New Jersey centers in the selection of Gov. John W. Griggs to succeed Judge McKenna as Attorney General. New Jersey politicians > generally agree that the ction of Griggs as Attorney General is the re- sult of the warm personal friendship exist- between President McKinley and Vice ident Hobart. From the days of John ms and Thomas Jefferson down to veland and Stevenson, Presidents and Presidents have usually been at words’ points, either personally or politi- cally, and it is regarded as refresuing in this vicinity to find a Vice President in harmony with his chief. It is quite generally conceded in Jersey that, but fer Hobart, the attorney generalship would have gone to the west, since the east already has its full quota of cabinet representatives. The appointinent of a Pacific coast man like McKenna to take the pl of a Pacific coast man like Field on the Supreme Bench is regarded as logical and natural. But that the suc- cessor of McKenna in the President's cabi- net should be a man from north of Mason and Dixon's Iine and east of the Alleghanies is regarded as something unusual. It is said to be a part of the program of Vice President Hobart to make New Jersey thoroughly end rel-ably republican. To this end Vice President Hobart, Gov. Griggs and John Kean of Elizabeth are bending all of thelr energies, and the appointment of Griggs tu the portfolio of Attorney General, just at this time, comes as a sort of an inspiration to the New Jersey republican leaders. It is worth remark!ng in this connection that, 2ven during the democratic landslides of a month ago, New Jersey in the main remained loyal to McKinley and the repub- hean party. While the democrats made heavy gains in New York, Ohio and cther states, the usval “off year’ swing of the political pendulum in New Jersey was so slight as to pe scarcely worth noticing.» Fapected Reaction Did Not Come. The expected reaction from the 80,000 pluraiity given McKinley last year only brought to the front a few democrats, who were elected on local grounds and because of personal popularity. It 1s believed in New Jersey that President McKiniey has taken this inte consideration and that the appointment of Griggs comes as a reward of merit for republican well doing. The ew governorship and the legislature in New Jersey are regarded as certain for the re- publicans for years to come. And this, too, in New Jersey, a state which only a few years ago was figured with New York and Indiana as being certain for the democrats in a combination with the sol'd south when the presidency was at stake. It is generally conceded that Senator Foster M. Voorhees of Union county will be elected presiding officer of the state senate. This will make Mr. Voorhees act- r of New Jersey, in place of ‘rie rise of young Voorhees in local politics has been remarkably rapid, anu his friends predict his election as governor of New Jersey at the next election. ‘his they figure will make him a vice presidential candidate, bility. ‘The prediction in this correspondence that Croker and the Marhattan railroad people would use the debt limit of the greater city as a club to kill off rapid transit and the underground road has attracted consider- able attention in political and financial cir- or even a presidential possi- KING’S we will sell at HALF PRICE. Already Manhattan Elevated railroad stock has risen several points, and the newspapers which were most emphatic in their advocacy of the underground are growing discouraged. They are taking it toi granted that the decision of the courts will be against the scheme. Bird S. Coler, the newly elected controller of the city, after a conference with Croker, could tigure out a credit for the new city of only 316,- 000,000. If Coler’s figures are anywhere near correct rapid transit may be said to be as dead as the proverbial dried herring. Bond Ixsue of $40,000,000. ‘The bonds to be issued next year for the building of the new public library, new halt of records and the new bridge over the Harlem river, will bring the total of bonds to be issued and sold in 1898 for public improvements in the present city close to ‘$40,000,000. It will be necessary to carry, on some public work in the other pbor- oughs, and the incoming administration during its jirst year in office will have to sell about double the amount of bonas than has ever before been placed upon the ket in any one year, to carry out the 1 provements already contracted and arrang- ed for. The city last year solid $20,UUv,UUU, and established a new record. it therefore seems certain that the democratic admin- istration will turn its back on its pre-ciec- tion pledges end repudiate the underground road and rapid transit, though the blame undoubtedly will be laid upon the courts in case the courts will consent to being made a catspaw for Croker, 19e.
