- & 14 THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1897-14 PAGES. —ss - HAVE NOT ADVISED HAWAII. AUCTIOY. SALES. AUCTION SALES. AUCTION SALES. +: AUCTION SALES. AUCTION SALES. AUCTION SALES. j¢ Department Officials Deny Ru- mor Concerning jemnity. The officials of the State Department deny the report that the United States government has advised Hawali to pay im- mediately to Japan, without waiting on an arbitration, the sum of money claimed by Japan on account of the deportation of Japanese laborers last spring. On the con- trary, the Department ef State has care- fully reframed from interfering by sugges- tion or otherwise between Japan and Ha- waii in the settlement of the matter at issue. It is not understood here that the naming by Japan of the sum of $200,000 as the claimed indemnity binds Hawaii to pay that much. It is merely a maximum limitation which the rules of arbitrations require to be placed on a claim wherever possible. Touching the theory that the settlement of the claim ts being purposely delayed by Hawaii in order to throw it upon the United States after annexation shallehave become an accomplished fact, it is said that nothing could be gained by such a course, since the pending annexation treaty provides in terms that the United States shall not assume a bility of exceeding $4,000,000 on account of annexation, and it is understood that there are already out- standing obligations to nearly that amount. Minister Hatch of Hawaii says that when he left Hawaii very recently the tn- dications were favorable to the settlement of the immigration dispute by arbitration, “and,” he continued, “instead of Hawaii's seeking to postpone the adjustment of the claim until after the question of the annex- ation of Hawaii to the United States is settled, the opposite is true. Hawaii is anxious to present a clean slate to the United States, but she cannot, of course, allow her concern in that direction to lure her into making concessions regarding Ja- panese immigration in case the annexation treaty should fail.” Mr. Hatch added that he had no knowl- edge of any purpose on the part of the United States to interfere in the Hawaiian- Japanese dispute. and he expressed the opinion that he would be in possession of that Information if such a course had been decided upon. “Until annexation is accomplished,” he said, “Hawaii must pur- sue her course as an independent nation, and it is not probable that the United States would advise the Hawaiian govern- ment to adopt a policy looking to the sur- render of her right to regulate immigra- tion, a right which the government of this country is constantly exercising.” —- eo HAWAHAN DELEGATES ARRIVE. shingtom to Op- Annexation. A San Francisco dispatch says: The com- mittee of native Hawaiians that is going to Washington to protest against the annexa- tion of the islands to the United States has errived here. It consists of two full-blood- ed and two half-blooded Hawaiians. ‘The leader of the delegation is James K. Kauila, president of the Hawatian Patri- otic League. The other members are David Kalu Kaliani, leader of the Second Ha- waiian Society, which differs from the Pa- triotic League only in its opinion on local questions; Wm. Auld, who owns much property on the Island of Oahu, and John Richardson, a lawyer frem the Island of Maui. ee To Form a Nail Trust. A Cleveland dispatch says: Stewart H. Chisholm left for New York~Saturday evening, to attend a meeting to perfect the consolidation of the wire rod, wire and nail factories of the country. He will meet Mr. Parks of Boston in New York, who is one of the chief figures in the development of the combine. r ALES OF REAL ESTATE, &e. AUCTION Today. ©. G.
