14 CAGE FOR THE PRESIDENT Troubles in Austrian Reichsrath Have Reached the Acute Stage. Dr. Abrahamvics Interposes a Board Fence Between Himself and the Rioto: Germans, A dispatch from Vienna, Austria, yester- @ay says: When the lower house of the reichstag reassembled today, after ad- journing yesterday from the scene of un- precedented disorder, all the ministers were present and the approaches to the presi- dential tribune were blocked, doors having been erected since the disgraceful fighting of yesterday in and about the tribune and throughout the house. The entrance of the president of the chamber, Dr. Abrahamovics, was the sig- nal for loud and ironical salutations, which were followed by vehement leftist shouts of “sham Dr. Abrahamovics made an attempt to speak, but Dr. Wolff, the German nation- alist leader, interrupted him by shouting: “Some one else must take the chair, not this swindler!” Herr Schoenerer, the leader of a section of the German opposition, then yelled at the top of his voice: “I demand the right to speak, to which I am entitled!” Thereupon Dr. Wolff retorted: “There is no such thing as right in this house. It is trodden under foot by his mamelukes.” As the uproar which followed showed every sign of increasing, Dr. Abrahamo- vies adjourned the house until o'clock this afternoon, amid a storm of “hurrahs” and “bravos." The sitting was resumed at 3:30. Im- mediately the leftists commenced a tre- mendous din, in the middle of which the German centrist Count Falkenhayn con- ceived as a happy idea a proposal to cow obstructionists by threatening their pock- ets. He moved that for the future disor- derly members might be suspended for three days by the president or for thirty days by the house, during which time their allowance should be stopped, while mem- bers refusing to leave the chamber when requested might be forcibly expelled. The speech was interrupted with con- tinuous uproar, Herr Wolif shouting, “Let's Pitch the blackguards out.” The president vainly called for order. Herr Wolff stationed himself directly in front of the presidential tribune and began a_shrill whistle. A number of deputies tried to force open the doors at the front of the platform, while a party of Czechs endeavored to prevent them. When the tumult was at its height Herr Abrahamovics declared that he regarded the motion of Count Falkenhayn as a nec- essary measure of self-defense, and called for the voting. The whole right at once arose. and the president declared the mo- tion carried. A number of deputies then began clambering upon the president's plat- form. whereupon he seized his bell and left the house. After a short interval he returned and began to address the chamber, but his voice was drowned in a torrent of leftist yells and shouts of “Get out” and “shame.” Finally the sitting was suspended for an hour, at the close of which President Abra- hamovies returned and announced that in accordance with wishes expressed in many quarters he had decided to close the sitting, to open again tomorrow. The scene: are regarded as a par- at were witnessed by dor, Sir Horace Rum- y Samuel L. Clemens (Mark . With other noted foreigners. Spanish ‘vernment Warns Him Against Making Public Criticisms. ‘The correspondent of the New York Jour- nal at Barcelona sends the following re- garding the movements of Gen. Weyler since his arrival in Spain: General de Pujols, the captain general of Catalonia, has had a conference with Gen- Navarro, the military governor of Bar- nd with the military judge advo- cate general, all three obeying therein in- structions telegraphed by the government. They considered minutely if according to military laws there was ground for taking proceedings against General Weyler for his words and acts since he arrived in Bar- celona. It was ultimately resolved to give proper warning to General Weyler before actually proceeding against him. The late captain general of Cuba was thereupon immediately summoned by Gen- eral de Pujols, who gave him a warning not to visit Badalona, the manufacturing town near Barcelona, where he intended to make a speech against Cuban autonomy, and where his friends promised him a warm reception, some factories being owned by them. Neither did he attend last night the performance at a small theater, where Weylerists had prepared a demon- stration in his honor and where poems lauding him were going to be recited for his delectation. His absence created much discontent, a small riot ensued, and police had to é.sperse the audience, which re- fused to | the theater unless the prom- ised heroic poems were read. The people ejected t their revenge by shouting “Death to the Yankees!” General Weyler seems to be just at pres- ent 2 dead cock in the pit. But he is re- vengeful, crafty. unscrupulous and ambi- tious. and is likely to be heard from after @ season. da note expressing re- , and disclaiming any WEY —o2——_—___ VICTORY MAY CAUSE DEATH. Bicyclist Robert Good Falls at End of a Race. Robert Good was seriously, perhaps fa- tally, injured yesterday afternoon on the Guttenburg race track during the racing meet of the Heather Bell Athletic Club of New York city. As he crossed the line a winner he fell ward over the handle bars as if he nad ainted. The wheel swerved and fell. ‘1 speed had been high, and the rider, thrown to the ground with great force, rolled over and over and lay still. He was unconscious when carried to the race track hotel. Two of his ribs were fractured and he had received a severe blow in the heart re- gion. This the doctor feared most, saying that the man was so exhausted when he re- ceived the injury that its result could not be foretold. -coe—_-—___ Has Shrunk Ten Inches. Frem the Cincinnat! Enquirer. A singular case of human shrinkage is re- ported at the Sokiiers’ Home in Sandusky, Ohio. Peter Cooley, who was admitted to the home about four years ago from Cleve- land, was, when he enlisted in the 4th In- diana Infantry in 1862, five feet two inches tall, and straight as an arrow. His per- pendicularity has been in nowise affected since that time, but today he stands exactly feur feet and four inches in his stocking feet, having, without in any manner affect- ing his health or general appearance, grown ten inches shorter. He is a well-built, com- pact old man, now in his eighty-first year, and is as lively and active as a boy. THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1897-16 PAGES. ORDER FROM GEN. ORDWAY. His Directions for the Arrest of Bev- erly fucker. From the Savannah News. Mr. S. F. B. Gillespie of this city, who %as a lieutenant in the United States vol- unteers and assistant provost marshal to Gereral Albert Ordway, whose death was chronicled in the Morning News dispatches yesterday, has in his scrap book many orders, passes and letiers written person- ally by General Ordway during the war, among the most interesting of which, per- haps, is the following: (Confidential.)—Office Provost Marshal General, Department of Virginia, Rich- mond, Va., September 10, 1865.—Lieutenant S. F. B. Gillespie, assistant provost mar- shal: Lieutenant: You will proceed imme- diately, accompanied by Detective Lohman, to arrest Beverly Tucker. If you succeed in making the arrest you will bring the prisoner to the city and convey him to the penitentiary, placing him in charge of Cap- tain J. R- Schoomaker, commanding mil- itary prisons, who will have received pre- vious instructions from me. You will be careful not to mention the name of your prisoner. Very respectfully, ALBERT ORDWAY, Lieutenant Colonel and Provost Marshal General. Beverly Tucker was suposed to have been concerned in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and there was a reward of $25,000 offered for his arrest. At the time this ¢rder was written, however, Tucker had made his escape to Canada. General Ordway, he says, was a most ex- cellent gentleman. He married in one of the best Virginia families, Miss Missouri Gedwin of Alexandria. General Ordway was a pupil of Prof. Agassaz before he entered the army. He was a great favor- ite with Gen. Foster, with whom he served at Fort Fisher, and Gen. A. H. Terry in the Army of the James and at Rich- mond, and the citizens of Richmond loved him for his humane and conciliatory policy of administering the complicated duties of his office in those trying times after the war. ———_——_—-e-—____ BELIEVED THORN INNOCENT. Juror Larsen Says First Jury Would Have Acquitted Him. Magnus Larsen, the juror whose sudden illness brought the trial of Martin Thorn to a sudden close and necessitated the summoning of another jury, is out in an interview wherein he is quoted as saying: “As you know, I was the only juror who, when he was questioned, practically said he thought Martin Thorn was guilty. Well, Mrs. Nack’s testimony ¢hanged all that. As I sat there and listened to her evidence I became more and more convinced that the woman was not telling the truth, and as the direct examination proceeded I began to have a conviction that Mrs. Nack, not Martin Thorn, committed the murder. When we returned to the hotel that night, I talked with several of the other jurors, and I found that a great many of them had the same fdea. One of the men said to me: “Her words sound all right, but they don’t seem to carry anything with them. I think she’s lying.” We were not allowed to see the papers during the trial, so we, none of us, knew anything about the alleged sup- plementary confession, or of Martin Thorn’s statemen' —— HAD A LONELY THANKSGIVING. Gen. Clay’s Young Wife Still Remains Away From Him. A dispatch from Whitehall, Ky., yester- day says there was a vacant seat at the table of Gen. Cassius Marcellus Clay, mas- ter of Whitehall, today. His young wife, Dora Richardson Clay, is still obstinate, and contented herself with the cornbread, black coffee and hog meat of her brother's table. By her side was seated Will Bryant, the young man who attempted to take his life Wednesday night. They chatted gayly and never spoke of Whitehall or General Clay. After dinner Dora had many callers, and she entertained them by playing on guitar and French harp. General Clay arose late this morning 3 feeling even worse, he said, than he had on any previous morning. No tid- ings had come to him from his absent wife, and when he seated himself at the table take of his Thanksgiving di yes filled with tears. He 's wife, who is the general's cook, had set before him the best that his poultry yard, wine cellar and garden afforded, but he did not seem to enjoy it. s Rev. Mr. Young, whom the General asked to induce his wife to return, has received word from her that she does not care for advice, and that she is capable of taking care of herself. ae ee = AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c. , cae Today.
