Distribution of Provisions From the Baptist Church to Deserving Poor —General and Personal. Evening Star Bureau, No. 529 King st., Bell Telephone No. 106, ALEXANDRIA, Va., November 25, 1896. Thanksgiving day has been observed as a partial holiday in this city. The banks have been closed, the post office has ob- served Sunday hours, the manufacturing plants have closed down, and most of the wholesale business houses closed up at noon. Foot ball games in several sections of the city have been the delight of the small boy. At the Baptist Church this morning there was a union service at which Rev. Wilbur F. Crafts of Washington preached the ser- mon. At the conclusion of this service a | large quantity of edibles which had been collected was distributed to the deserving poor of the city, of which there are said to be a great many. Addresses were also made by local ministers. At Christ Church, St. Paul's Church and Grace Church the resident rectors officiated and preached appropriate sermons. The Alexandria infirmary has been the recipient of a bountiful supply of the neces- sities of life, which will greatly aid this deserving institution. A large number of people went over to Washington during the day. Strack by an Electric Car. The 6 o'clock electric train from Wash- ington last night, Motorman Feelan and Conductor Jones in charge, struck a wagon belonging to Mr. W. G. Lown of Washing- ton and damaged it badly, knocking off the rear wheels and breaking the shafts. Mr. C. W. Davis, agent of the Lown Coffee and Spices Company, and Mr. J. W. Howard were in the wagon, but both escaped with- out injury. lt is said that the driver at- tempted to cross the track ahead of the train and was struck in the attempt. The accident occurred in front of the Star bu- reat "whe Evidence of Prosperity. St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church was the scene of several pretty weddings yes- terday. I was running as a conducter be- tween Russellville and Owensboro, as I did for many years, and on a trip in the winter of 1881 I got a pretty country girl passenger at a little flag station south of Central City about 9:45 a. m. A few miles further on, at another small station, a big, strapping-looking farmer, dressed in brown jeans, with his trousers tucked in his tall boots, got on my train. The fellow hadn't opened the car door till he spied the rustic lass, and before he took his seat in front of the girl he had smiled at her. I punched his ticket, went in the smokingcar, and on my return to the regular passenger coach found the Green River tiller of the soil sit- ting in the same seat with the maiden, chatting with her as if he had known her since birth.
