THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1897—16 PAGES. - 14 CONTAGION IN LEPROSY. The Disease Never Originates, but fs Always Transferred. From the New York Herald. The escape, transfer, furlough, or what- ever else we may call ft, of the lepers from North Brother Island has brought up for Giseussion the vexed question of the con- tagiousness of the disease from which they are now suffering. The health board, evi- dently with the desire of ridding itself of any exira responsibility of positive decision in the matter, has secured the written opin- fon of several leading dermatolcgists, which, at vest, is a trifle evasive, judic.ousiy non- committal and eminently qua.ifying. To any on. & positive information regarding t sd po.nt, the conciusions would naturaily be that there is muca dii- ference of op ong authorities on ihe subject, and that sometimes the dizease communicable and sumetimes noi, de, ing prince pally upon the controling circum- stances of chmaie aud individual predispo- sition. In other words, it would appear that it is not speciaily contagious 1 the Vicinity cf New York. This is undoustedly arue, although the report in question do25 not give any very tangible reason why this concius.on is reached. When we narrow ourseives to the reat question at the very root of the matler re- garding the danger of an increase of the disease ii lecalities, whether we ex- plain the of history on the basis of contagion or not, it is very obvious that the malady actually spreads from one inc vidual to anotner by some mean<, known or unknown, rt communities. Witness i extension in the Sandwict m in which the United States is at pre: ent especiaily inte annexation. Prior to IS#8 the disease w unkuown , but after its by the ¢ se it broke the re ma ton, so t now a spec lokai num| In many respec yersons affected, perences have eq of the twelfth when in France d the ones turies, e over two Is for the segregauon of the vic , and in the entre kingdom there Was scarcely a town without its ieper house We are very ready to admit that much more is now known of the disease than was possible in former times, especially in view Of the recent discovery ¢ ini bacidus @s a causative element. From ihe latter demenstration, in view cf our knowiedge uf similar d ises having specifi: microtves, it | is to conclude, anaiogieaily at least, that the spread of the disease is best ¢ plained on the theory of inecuiation. Al though this hes not been absolutely proven by actual experiment on the lower animais or by ace-dental circun the ity of such a thing is quite well ac mitted by leading authorities. In fact, it is zeneraily beli that Father Damien was infected im this way by direct inoculation while dressing 3 leprous ulcer of one of his fle Dr. Leredde of Paris, a leading au- ority on the subject, in bis interesting in- terview, d to the Sunday Hera.d, men tions similar instances of propagation by ike means Whatever may be the particu of communieability, it is quite certain that the disease never originates by itself, and that the afflicted person must always have om = direct or indirect contact wii Even if the actual means to th are at present past find.ng out, there is ugh of relation between cau: © put us reasouably on our lepers are around. ly asserted that there h no case in which leprosy has 4 xd in New York, netw.thstanding re have n during the last quarter of # century from twenty to twenty-five lep: at various times among us. While this rs hopeful in ou ection, there is no rexson why we s uld not be eful in nother. It is beeomingly prudent for us to take no s I risks even for a single exce pn to a su ed rule. The prror of leprosy dates back to b.bdlical history, and the fear of it is still with us. We are not in a position to take risks, health bourd or ne health bourd. Under present e:r- umstances. it seems to us eminently prop- Fr, now that the health board can mak from th s in hand, that the ssion should continue to take unfertunates and give them vital treatment as may S would net only be con: ane, but perfectly safe.
