14 THE EVENING STAR, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER. 18, 1897—14 PAGES. THE X-RAY BURNS (Continued from Eleventh Page.) question, experimentally, with the same purpose in view which he had when he studied his profession. It is worth,it. A Hard Question. “What causes the burn? Now you ask me a hard question. I do believe that this question is as important, from a scientific point of view, as that other one—‘what is the X ray? “Let me give you some of my experi- riental results, and you will see how hard it is for me to answer the question. At the same time, I will give you my opinion based on these experiments. Before I go into these results, I want to say a few words about Tesla, whom I consider the foremost eaperimentalist of this century. “Tesla, some time ago, laid down certain reasons for his belief that the X ray was @ projection of material particles—that is, the bombardment which went on within the exhausted bulb, when the energizing coil was a powerful producer of energy, was sufficient to project molecules of the residu- al gas, or particles of the source which was bombarded, right through the glass walls of the bulb. “From his experiments he was led to be- lieve that sufficient energy can be given the molecuies of the residual gas to cause them to pass through the outer walls of the tube. ww, it is a fact that all X-ray tubes, as they are used, keep on growing higher in vacuum until a point is reached when it is impossible to force any current into the tube. ny Solve the Problem. “Some time ago I found some of my bulbs covered with a dark film on the out- sice, which I found not to be ordinary dust. I wiped the tubes with a clean rag of linen and took off a large quantity of black material. I have sent this to a chemist for analysis. If it should prove to be particles of platinum from the reflector within the bulb, the burn question may be at once solved. Now as to my own per- scral theory, deduced from my experience: “I had occasion, not long ago, to make an examination of a patient, and he was con- veniently and comfortably placed on an improvised operating table. The tube was set in operation and preparation made to make a thorough examination of the foot of the subject for a piece of needle which had broken off in it. I was somewhat astonished to find that when I approached my hand to the foot I received a spark from it, indicating that the patient was a receptacle for a considerable charge of electricity, and a further inquiry showed that this charge must have emanated from the X-ray tube. As the operation of the induction coil which energized the tube showed that the current from its terminals tended to coalesce, and therefore neutral- lze, it struck me as peculiar that we should find a distinct charge in the body of the patient. “I conceived the idea then that when the electricities of the two signs met in the evacuated bulb, it set up a characteristic Wave motion of its own, and peculiar, of course, to a meeting of the two kinds of electricity under these particular condi- tions—that is, meeting in a vacuum. At once the question arose in my mind, Is this charge responsible for the decomposi- tion of the tissue, so often noted as an ef- fect of long exposure? I reasoned that if this were so, there must be a way of get- ting ria of the cause. I also reasoned that if these wonderful rays carried with them, from the tube, a charge of electricity pecu- liar to Itself, such a charge, in passing through the skin, might produce all the ef- fects such as may be noticed when elec- trical discharges are passed through alka- line or acid solutions. Reactions in the Fluids. Under the surface of the skin, this par- ticular charge might produce chemical re- actions in the fluids known to exist in the skin tissues. To me, the problem appeared to be to get rid of the effect of the ele=trical charge which, it was evident, was carried to the skin by the rays. 1 knew, from Tesla’s experiments, that {f a metal screen were interposed in the path of the rays, some of the effects of the molecular bom- if berdrent would be annulled, but that the screen were of any considerable thi ness, the effect on the photographic plate or on the fluorescing screen would be en- ely done away with. As my cbject was to rid the rays of their electrical charge only, and knowing that the thinnest possible metal foil would do this, and that the foil might be of exceed- ing inness, sufficiently so that the effect of absorption on the fluorescent screen would not be noticeable, I chose gold foil, such as gilders use, putting it in shape on cardboard and connecting up the metal Proper to the earth by means of a wire connecting the gold foil screen to a con- venient gas pipe. Now the object of this arrangement was this: The gold foil captured the electricity from. the, rays, and the wire and gas pipe carried off the charge to the earth. Simple, is‘ it not? Deer Red Spot. “Effective? Well, let me tell you of the experiments with it. You see here on my arm a very deep red spot. That is an X- ray burn—one deliberately made to test the value of the gold foil sercen. I pre- pared a heavy lead plate to cover my arm. In the center of it I bored a hole one inch im diameter. I covered my arm with the Plate, and, using a powerful tube, sent the rays through this hole for fifteen minutes. The result you see for yourself. I have @ severe burn of the exact’size and shape of the hole in the lead plate. lind, now, the lead plate was of suf- fictent thickness to effectually stop all rays except those going through the hole. At the same time, I changed the plate to en- other portion of my arm and expos2d this tirae for twenty minutes. You see abso- lutely no effect, for this reason! Before 1 made this last exposure I covered the Lole in the plate with the same amount of gold foil that I have since adopied for iny regu- lar sercen. When so arranged I connected the whole combination to the earth through the wire leading to the gas pipe. By tnis means I robbed the rays of their electric charge, carrying it off to the earth, and, in a re, proving that the fault lies rical condition of the rays. does not prove anything against ¥ of the projection of material this condition may exist and Particles cause the burn by reason of their being carriers of an electrical charge. Yet, when robbed of this feature, as they ™may be by the metal earth - conuected screen, they may be ineffective In the pro- duction of these burns. A Wave of Energy. my opinion the whole cause les in the electricity carried forward by the wave of energy, which we now call the X ray. By the use of a conducting substance of sufficient thinness, which does not inter- fere with th ves except to rob them of that feature which can cause decomposi- tion in the wes of the body, and which We know electricity can do, the wave mo- which affects the fluorescent screen and the photographic plate goes forward in the performance of {ts humane cuty but slightly impeded by the extreme thinness Of the gold foil screen; and while careless- ness or has been in the past, largely a ble for the many cases brought to the att tion of physicians, I am firm in my belief that the screen which I have de- vised will prevent serious injury to any one, electrivaily un- His First Test. Mr. Woods’ first experiment was with a screey about 10 by 10 inches in dimensions. He covered it with gold fotl, because, as he Says, it was the only metal he could then obtain as a substitute for the aluminum employed by Tesla. It was a decided im- provement. He gave his hand a generous exposure under the screen, and no ill-ef- fects were experienced. Placing the screen within six inches of it, he failed to note the heating sensation which he nearly always experienced previously when exhibiting his skull without the screen. ’ The natural result of his discovery is that Mr. Woods has received numerous letters congratulating him upon his succe’s. The letters he received are not exclusively from ‘American scientists. Some have come from Europes, all drawn out by the publication In a Journal devoted to the advancement ot electrical science of a description of his process. He claims no originality in the mmatter, explaining that he had accomplished nothing which was not the “direct result of Mr. Tesla’s already published results,” his experiments being merely modifications of Tesla’s methods. Among the first, how- ever, to open up @ correspondence with Mr. Woods touching the utility of the gold foil screen was Mr. Tesla, and he has since taken a lively interest in the process of de- velopment. Mr. Wocds has an office and laboratory combined, furnishing the equipment for scientific research for his own pleasure and at his cwn expense. It is in this office that he meets his friends of evenings, and where he has frequently furnished rare entertainment, in various lines. Now It is Science. Lately, science has held sway, and the X ray is on every program. So, also, are sundry wonderful electrical effects, pro- duced as “extra numbers.” For the bene- fit of suffering humanity often, and fre- quently for his own pleasure and the en- tertainment of his friends, he exemplifies the efficacy of the ‘‘wonderful light, and the power Invisible.” Physicians take pa- tients to him for the benefit to be gained through the medium of his superior equip- ment. Dentists have visited him in parties numbering thirty or more for the pleasure of seeing the filling in each other’s teeth by mezns of the X ray. Senators and representatives, noted repre- sentatives of the stage of both sexes, pro- fessional men of all classes have been amused and Instructed in the little office krown as the Chateau. Photographs have been made of the bones of the face, the feet and limbs of living subjects which disclosed for the informa- tion of physicians the seat of diseases located theretofore but imperfectly, or not at all. The particular foot mentioned in which the needle was broken off left its outlines impressed upon a sensitive plate with the fragment of steel plainly in view. These photographs form an interesting col- lection and are now in Mr. Woods’ posses- sion. ——__ COMPETITOR'S CREW RELEASED. Men Will Sail for New York on To- day’s Steamer. A dispatch to the New York Herald from Havana, Cuba, yesterday, says: The Com- petitor prisoners have at last been released from Cabano fortress by order of Captain Gencral Blanco, acting in accordance with erders from Spain. The men will sail direct for New York tomorrow on the steamship Yumuri, which is due here on November 21. ——_+ e+___ Another Foot Ball Victim. Eddie Buckman, one of the pupils of the Grammar School at Stoneham, Mass., is dead as the direct result of foot ball as it is played in the colleges. He was downed with the ball, and the other boys piled on top of him. When the scrimmage was over the under boy had received injuries which resulted in his death. ——— AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c.
