Consul Hugh Long at Nogales, Mexico, sends the Secretary of State a statement made to Mexican customs officials at Guay- mas, Sonora, Mexico, by Martin Mendez, master of the sloop Otilo, relative to the supposed murder of Captain Porter ana companions, all American citizens, by the Seris Indians on Tiburon Isiand, in the Gulf of California. Captain Porter and com- panions sailed out of San Diego. Cal., in a small boat, and were engaged in collecting shells. They left the port of Guaymas August 9, under special permission from the government, to explore the shores and islands of the gulf. The island of -Tiburon is one of the larg- est and most picturesque islands in the Gulf of California, and is peopled by a most remarkable tribe of Indians, who are noted for their large size and extraordinary ath- letics on land and water. Those who have witnessed their aquatic sports at a respect- ful distance declare that many of them can actually waik, or rather run, upon the water, with no other assistance than broad, rawhide shoes. They are expert fishermen and huntsmen, giving most of their time to this sort of employment. They have rigid ideas of maintaining the game pres their island, and limit, under severe pe Ulies. the killing of game. They destroy all children in infancy that are malformed or appear to lack a certain degree of intelli- gence. In this y the standard of both physical and mental conditions in both sexes is kept very high. It is currently believed that at one time the native women were exterminated to make room for a whiter and superior race of women. The nucleus of this race of higher women wes formed from captures made at various times, extending over a series of years, on land and water. They have no school but each home has system of mental and_ physical ining. The natives guard their shores day and night, and no man is allowed to penetrate the island if he shall succeed in making a landing. A change took place yesterday in the holding of the stock of the Cincinnati Com- mercial Tribune which will put the con- trol of that paper in the hands of the late owners of the Tribune. This change was brought about by James M. Glenn purchasing $240,000 of the mann resigned as president and director. A. The government examiners of tobacco at several of the more important ports met in conference in New York recently with a view to the adoption of a uniform practice in the classification of !mported cobacco. The report of the conference, which has reached the Treasury Department, makes three recommendations, as follows: First, that 25 per cent of all marks of every in- veice of imported tobacco should be ex- amined, and that the rule for the present be limited to tobacco imported from the West Indies,- Mexico and South America; second, that the percentage of wrappers found in filler bales be reached by the count of leaves; third, that the districts I frem which tobacco is imported be marked on the invoices wherever practicable. These recommendaticns will be adopted by the ‘Treasury Department. The President has recognized Leoncio Tagle as @hilean consul at Sau Francisco.
