British Cruiser’s Crew Explore Cocos Island Without Success. A dispatch from Victoria, B. C., yester- day says: “Harford is no dreamer. The treasure ts at Cocos Island, but we have not recovered it.” So say th» officers of the British flag ship Imperieuse, which returned yesterday irom an unsuccessful search after the buried millions in Peruvian state jewels anc bullion. These British officers add that if Admiral Palliser had only allowed them two days mcre they would have feend the treasure. They had but two days, and these days were very rainy, and, although 200 men can do much work in a day, water-filled excavations are hard to_ handle. The bluejackets followed Harford’s or- ders and his Spanish chart. They dug as he directed for six feet, and there uncov- ered the great slab of granite described on the chart, with its distinguishing cipher marks. They were pushing on to strike the tun- nel said to lead to the cave of the jewels and gold, when a cave-in blocked progress and canie near burying the workmen. Gun cotton was tried, with the hope of helping matters, but it brought down the entire hanging hillside, and then the admiral said his warship could no longer be delayed, and left the island, deaf to the pleadings of his sanguine officers. At San Jose de Guatemala Harford was dropped, and there, with Admiral Palliser's aid, he succeeded in interesting the com- mander of the United Staies steamship Alert in his tale of riches. The officers of the Alert, it is said, will take up the search where it war abandoned by the Imperieuse.
