14 MORGAN ON HAWAII Alabama Senator Gives His Views to the New York Herald. LIFPLE OPPOSITION 70 ANNEXATION Best Elements in Population Friend- ly to United States. RUST MOVE SUGAR = LATE Senator John T. Morgan, who is now in Honolulu, sends the following communica- tion to the New York Herald regarding the situation in Hawail: HONOLULU, September 23, 1897. (via San Francisco, Cal., Monday.) To the Editor of the Herald: There is no active or organized opposition to annexation in Hawaii. Some royalists naturally regret every step that leads to the dedication of the country to free <elf- gcvernment, which is now beyond reversal, and they excite the apprehensions of scme natives that annexation will tend to their social degradation.. But the effort and its results are insignificant. The less informed classes are free from political cares, and those of the educated classes are free from all jealousy toward the white race. Their desire for annexation is intense and ear- nestly patriotic. They are American in the most decided ferm, without any tolerance of Asiatic the- ories or forms of civilization. ‘They copy nothing from the Asiatics, while they eagerly adopt the customs and manners of the Americans. If there is any actual con- treversy about annexation in the republic the fact is not discernible in any open dem- onstration that it is at all important. A meeting at Hilo recently, in opposition to annexation. was a failure, the people tak- ing no interest in it. The Only Question Involved. The settled and universal conviction is that this is an American question between American people, as it has always been in our dealing with it. Annexation to the United States, or a protectorate by our government, are the issues to which all discussion is confined, it being agreed on all sides that ihe islands will not have the settled prosperity and conteatment they need and Jeserve if their foreign relations are to depend upon-their naval power for security and freedom from asitation. For want of metals and fuel the power” of the islands is far short of the importance of their agricultural preduc- tions and of their value as a commercial center and as a place of rest and refresh- ment and for supplies and repairs for navi- gators. We can supply these wants quick- er and more conveniently than any other country, and this fact musi necessarily draw Hawaii to us “with hooks of siee that no power can destroy. In this respect our only rival is Great Britain, through the Straits of Fvea. Whatever country furnishes ships of war and of commerce to Hawaii will find here ample material for supplies and a body of native sailors that are not excelled in many of the best qualities by any people in the werld. This will be the nucleus cf our su- premacy in the navigation and commerce of the North Pacific. As to ihe wealth and power this will bring us, all commercial history is full of narrative. If conjecture en need to be indulged, the wildest fancy weuld become tame in the presence of ob- ¥icus facts that already are visible at Henolulu. Value of Pearl Harbor. Considered in & sense as broad as the dis- tance between Asia and America, there ix no plac: on either coast, or in any island of the Pacitic ocean, that ts of equal import- ance und value to commerce or nav. power as Pearl Harbor. The reasons are that it is central in the are of the great circle, north of the equator, that is d scribed by the coasts of Asia and Americ: It has the best climate of any port on either coast. It affords the best and cheap- est shelter to shipping pensive ways for pro’ coaling and watering vessels of any size. e sea line of the harhor Is a corai reef, about eight miles from the shore of rber. in its inland stretch, on a di - bay divides into three bodies s it reaches inland, all nearly of - and dep and the least ex- isioning, repairing, The peninsulas that ters approach the en- the outer bar—the coral distance of three miles, and luiely. rough within command it a of te harbor, with their meanderings, are include! in a space harbor reef Inland, the shores about six miles wide, wall be seen by consulting a chart of the The outer bar is of soft corals, lly removed by pumping, and the be dredged is less than a half and space m: All these questions are put at rest by the dredsing, cf the same kind of a bar at Honetalu, not six miles further up the and are no longer debatable. Up to a month ago it looked as if Claus Spreckels, backed by the trust, would be able to pre- vent passage of the annexation treaty. The officers of the Hawaiian government have said openly and in private that the gov- ernment could not be longer maintained under the present conditions, and things locked pretty black. When W. G. Irwin went to San Francisco several weeks ago it was almost entirely for the purpose of bringing about the re- conciliation between the island people and Spreckels that now seems in a fair way to be consummated. He was taken ill soon after his arrival in San Francisco, and dur- ing his illness many things occurred that made his task a much easier one than it would have been had ke gone at it imme- diately upon his arrival there. As I am about to send this disptch to the stcamer I have received further confirmation of the story of Claus Spreckels’ offer of concilia- tion, together with the information ‘hat the Hawaiian government is ready for peace, and will meet Mr. Spreckels half way. ame Favorite Line to Baltimore Is the Pennsylvania railroad. A neatly dressed young colored woman named Lizzie Brown was a defendant in the Police Court yesterday on a charge of carrying concealed about her person a loaded pistol. James Pettigrew, a colored man, appeared as the prosecuting witness. He testified that he had lived with Lizzie as her husband for nearly six years, and when he left her to marry another she came after him with a loaded pistol. Lizzie denied that she had carried the weapon concealed, but admitted she had it in her hand. She got it, she said, from the cabman. Judge Mills said it was a new occupation for cab drivers to furnish loaded weapons to their passengers, but even if it were true the woman was guilty.
