Inquiry at the residence of the apostolic delegate, Archbishop Martinelli, develops the fact that no official information of the appointment of Bishop Maes of Covington, Ky., to the vacant archbishopric of New Orleans has been received, nor has any communication been had from Rome or any other source that the appointment is likely to be made. Im fact, {t is regarded at the legation as very unlikely that any name has been decided upon, and, in view of the fact that no Associated Press dis- patch has arrived from Rome announcing that the appointment was to be made, the rumor is regarded as untrue. Dr. F. Z. Rooker, the secretary of the legation, states that the only way the news could have leaked out would be that some friend in Rome of Bishop Maes had noti- fied him of the fact. As, however, such a communication would come by mail. and as several mails have arrived in this city since the adjournment of the propaganda, it is Practically impossible that announcement of the appointment has been thus com- municated. The propaganda has charge of the matter of appointments in all coun- tries where the Roman Catholic faith is Lot the state religion, and, as it has many such appointments to consider, it will prob- ably not act on the New Orleans matter until after the vacation, which began the OF THE National Bank of the Republic Building. While nothing official—or unofficial, for that matter, has reached Monsignor Marti- uelli, yet Dr. Rooker states that the choice practically lies between Bishop Maes and Archbishop Chapelle cf Canta Fe. The lat- ter is a Frenchman, and, while Bishop Maes is not, he is next door to it, being a Belgian. Bishop Camillus Paul Maes was born at Courtrai, Belgium, in 1846, and_ studied philosophy and theology in the Seminary of Bruges, finishing his studies at the} ~IX@S, NOS. 134 AND 136 JEPFERNO: American College at Louvain. Bishop Maes| FIVE O°CLOCK P.M.. the following described has made a study of the history of the | Iand ard premises. situate in the. couny of Catholic Church in the west. Archbishop Chapelle’s career is very much like that of Bishop Maes, except that he was born in France instead of Belgium. After serving for some years as pastor of St. Joseph's Church, Baltimore, he was ap- pointed pastor of St. Matthew's Church in this city, and in this position became well known to Washingtonians and to the Catholic world at large. Several years ago the archbishopric of Santa Fe was carved out of the archdiocese of New Orleans, and the then Rev. P. L. Chapelle, D. D.; be- came its first metropolitan. His see is di- vided into a diocese of Denver and a vicar- ate apostolic of Arizona, but as the terri- tory is very large, and for the most part in not a very high state of civilization, he has had very hard work, in which, however, he has been successful. Archbishop Keane's Position. Archbishop Keane's name has been defi- nitely removed from all connection with the appointment. The archbishop has stated most decidedly that he does not wish the appointment, and that he is satisfied with his present work in Rome, and his wishes in the matter have been officially forwarded to Rome. The archbishop’s friends have all along held that the post was noi so high as a man of his position might expect, and “in consequence it is believed he will not re- turn permanently to the United States until some one of the strong northern archdioceses is vacant, the time for which may not be so far distant, as several of the metropolitans are well up in years.
