14 ——S>} TORPEDO FLOTILLA PROGRAM. Extended Cruise to Be Made by the Venneln. ‘The program of the cruise of the torpedo, flotilla has been completed. The vessels composing this small fleet will leave New York tomorrow week, and will make an extended cruise in southern waters. The first stop will be made in Delaware bay, where a week will be spent in various naval exercises and maneuvers, after which the flotilla will proceed to Chesapeake bay for a stay of about a week, during which time the flotilla will enter the Potomac and make a short visit to this city. From the Chesapeake the fleet will proceed fur- ther south, stoppirg at all important points, including Galveston, Texas, after which’ the fleet will return to the Missis- sippi and ascend that river as far as St. Louis. ‘The flotilla will consist exclusively of tor- pedo vessels, including the 30-knot boat Porter; the Dupont, capable of nearly 28 knots; the Foote, which made 2414 knots; the unfortunate Ericsson, and the Cushing, a 23-knot boat, and one of the best of her size ever buiit. Lieutenant Commander Kimball will be the admiral of the little fleet, und the Foote will be his flagship. Lieutenant Winslow will probably be with Captain Kimball as chief of his staff. Commanding the Dupont will be Lieu- tenant Spencer S. Woods, former naval aid to Secretary Herbert. In charge of the Porter will be Lieutenant J. C. Fremont, son of the Pathfinder. Lieutenant Albert Gleaves will command the Cushing, Lieu- tenant Nathaniel Usher the Ericsson, and Lieutenant W. 8S. Rodgers the Foote. The executives will be as follows: Ensign Frank H. Clark, on the Dupont; Ensign Crossley, on the Porter; Ensign Bostwick, on the Ericsson; Ensign George D. Mitchell, on the Foote, and Ensign J. C. Breckinridge, on the Cushing. There will be one medical officer assigned to accompany the flotilla. and one engineer, O. W. Koester, who will be with the Foote. . = TO HONOLULU. SENT The Small Gunbeat Wheeling Sent to the Hawaiian Capital. Lat2 yesterday afternoon orders were is- sued by the Navy Deparment for the im- mediat> dispatch of the gunbcat Wheeling from San Franc'sco to Honoiulu, and she started on her long journey last night. The Wheeling has been put in commission re- cently, and was about to start in a short time for Sitka, taking stores and relief men for the gunboat Concord, now on duty in Alaska. She is a small but well-equip- ped modern gurboat, scmewhat smaller than the Bennington, now at Honolulu. The Philadelph‘a will remain at Honolulu only until relieved by the Wheeling, and will not await tne arrival of the cruiser Yorktown from Yokohama, as criginally intended. The dispatch of the Wheeling to the Hawatian cap:tal changes the original orders respecting the Yorktown, which was to relieve the Philadelphia and remain at Honolulu until the arrival of the flagshio Baltimore. It is therefore probabie that the Yorktown, which is due at Honolulu about the 15th proximo, will remain there only leng enough to take on coal and pro- visions and then centinue her voyage ‘to San Francisco. The movements of the Yorktown will be governed. however, by circumstance and she will be detained at Honolulu in case Admiral Miller deens the gunboats Bennington and Weeling in- adequate for the assertion and mainte- nance of American rights in that quarter. The Philadelphia upon reaching Mare Is- Jand will place most of her men on the Baltimore, which has just been extensively repaired, and the latter wiil go to Hawali as Admiral Miller's flagship. The admiral will remain at Honolulu while the ex- change is being made. ———_-e-_____ Ordnance Bureau Estimates. Some estimates in the Navy Department that will escape the pruning knife of Sec- retary Long are those submitted by the ordnance bureau. These estimates are re- garded as of vital importance to the main- tenance and development of the whole navy. The items for guns for the auxiliary cruisers are to be pressed vigorously, as well as the estimate for smokeless powder and for the conversion of the present type of naval guns below six inches in caliber into rapid-fire guns. The smokeless powder estimate will be large, but it is believed to be very necessary that our sailors should have as good weapons and ammunition as any in the world, and that they may have the means of familiarizing themselves with the use of this modern ammunition. ————-e+____ AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c.
