FOURTH, 1897, AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M., the ae are ae in the case of the Wastintoa is islet of COMMADIR, ote 1230 156 ded the inquest in : ashington, District of Columbia, , a tones aciwe. weks ago in Kellogg's | West, took charge of my store for agfew | Mig die Gu JS oo set at od ot Bee iy foun hed a con- | 20Urs; with the understanding that he | in‘. The jury reached a c would remain on duty until 6 o'clock p. m. | of “Long Meadows,” ax per plat recorded in Book clusion about 10:30 o'clock, expressing the belief that the body was that of Mark A. G. Clift, jr., but reached no conclusion con- cerning the manner of death. Several wit- nesses were examined by the jury, includ- ing four physicians. So far as the latter were concerned, it was strictly a case of doctors disagreeing. Two of them were pesitive that the pelvis of the deceased was that of a male, while the others were equally certain that it belonged to a fe- male. Mrs. Clift and her brother-in-law were algo present at the inquest as witnesses. The forther is fully convinced that she is new tae widow of the victim of the Kellogg woods tragedy, while the latter, although he thinks the body is that of his brother, would not be surprised at any time should the supposed dead brother reappear in the flesh. Members of the jury were not satisfied with this identification, but the evidence of Prof. Knowlton that the picture of Clift bere a striking resemblance to- the man whom he had seen in Kellogg's wocds caused the jury to express the belief that the body was his; hence the conclusion. In addition to returning the verdict men- tioned, the jury passed a resolution cen- suring the sheriff for his apparent indiffer- ence concerning the case. The resolution and I went home to get some much-needed rest. Shortly before that hour I returned to my store and was greatly surprised to find a friend in charge. . “Meanwhile, Clift had disappeared, and, as I subsequently discovered, carried off ali the ‘money he had taken in for sales dur- ing the afternoon, amounting to $6 or $7. He had also abandoned the store, in which upprotected condition it had been found by my friend above referred to. “I also learned the next day that Clift was seen to take an Ocean View train, and that he went in that way to Old Poin+, where he took the steamer for Washing- ton, since which t'me no trace of him, so far ag I ara aware, has been obtained.” Mr. Scott added that he could think of no reason why any one should wish to mur- ne Clift, and believed he committed sui- cide. A Dissenting View. At McDonald’s drug store in the same city, where Clift was employed for nearly the whole of his residence in Norfolkt The Star reporter was informed that there was an impression among those who knew Clift well that he is still alive, and that the finding of the bill heads of Mr. Scott and other papers, which seemed to indicate that there was no doubt of the remains being those of Clift, was a part of a plan devised by Clift to deceive his wife as to reads: his wher2abouis. “The jury takes occasion to call attention On the day that Clift disappeared from to the indifference of the sheriff of Prince | Norfelk, the gentleman sai, Mrs. Clift George’s county, who failed to render any | was ill in bed. Clift bade h’s wife assistance by his presence or advice in the | gcod-bye, saying that he was going investigation made in the case which has been prolonged almost two weeks.” Jury and Spectators. The hearing was held in the town hail, where the coroner aud jurymen sat about a long table. The spectators, and they were numerous, occupied seats about the wall and stood close behind the jurymen. On the table, wrapped in a newspaper, was the head of the deceased, which had been used as a plaything only a couple of hours befere the assembling of the jury. In a box, also upon the table, was the pelvis of the deceased, while some of the bones of the leg were also there for the medical Witnesses to cxamine. The coat and other articles of weari apparel found in the down town and would be back to dinner. He did not return, and no one in Norfolk, so far as is known, has since had any in- formation about him. Clift left his wife in a destitute condi- tion, the gentleman said, and but for friends she would have suffered. Finally, her friends raised a sum of money for her and she was sent to the home of her pa- rents in Baltimcre. ———.—___ IMPORTANT NAVAL CHANGES.
