Contrary ne persons that the laying of the heavy new rails on the bridge would weaken the structure, the effect has been to make t bridge mcre solid than at any time hereto- fore. A strong effort will, it is made to induce the District Commissioners to rescind the order, a copy of which has been posted in several prominent places on the bricge for a long time past, directing drivers to walk their horses over the structure, under a heavy penalty. The movement to change this has the indorse- ment of a large number of citizens on the south side of the river, and it will urged that the necessary for the order which was made before the days of rapid understood, be transit were inaugurated, has long sin passed away, and, that if it is not r scinded the benefits to be derived from quick transit facilities between the sub- urbs on the south side of the Anacostia river and the city proper will, to a large extent, be lost. An effort will also be made to induce President Randle to operate his cars over the entire route of the Capital railway’s line as soon as the bridge is fully ready for the cars by the use of horses on the bridge. while the underground cable is being put in, and it is believed this will be done. The only objection to such arrang: ment, it is said, is the possible interfer. ence with the work of the contractors who are to equip the bridge with the under- ground system. ——_--—_ linois Steel Company's Mills to Start The Illinois Steel Company has signed the amalgamated scale and the big mills at Chicago, Milwaukee and Joliet will start up after nearly two months of idleness.
